Art Department
Elementary Art Programs
The art curriculum that is used in the Boise Schools
Elementary programs is known as "Portfolios." Art
is a powerful language that ignites imaginations and
helps students acquire critical thinking and communication
skills. This program integrates classroom instruction,
hands-on activities, and literacy building experiences
to turn on the power of art for all students.
Focusing on teaching the basic "Elements of Art" and "Principles
of Design" with each lesson, these units help
develop fine motor skills and allow individual exploration
with a wide range of mediums. It also has a collection
of beautiful, large color prints and a packet of overhead
(color) transparencies for teaching an excellent appreciation
of art history. Large oversized books with illustrations
of studio activities, technique tips, and strategies
for lessons are also included.
Curriculum resources are located in each of the schools
and have been provided for each grade level beginning
in Kindergarten. Large canvas bags containing these
materials (plus additional posters) are shared by the
teachers in that particular grade. Art Parents access
the curriculum through the classroom teacher, and the
art lessons are coordinated as a team. The Art Cottage
has additional curriculum materials or they can be
ordered through Scott-Foresman
Publishing.
