Elementary Art Programs - Scope &
Sequence
KINDERGARTEN: 
- Learns names of colors
- Expresses ideas in a variety of art experiences
- Uses imagination in talking about artworks
- Participates in manipulation of materials (such
as crayons, pencils, markers, clay, scissors, paste,
paint, chalk) to create artworks
- Experiments with lines, shapes, texture, and color
- Develops visual/perceptual skills by looking at
their environment
- Learns proper care and clean-up of materials and
takes responsibility for it
GRADE 1:
- Builds self-esteem through creative and imaginative
activities, while acquiring basic media skills
- Recognizes visual elements of design (space, lines,
shapes, texture, and color)
- Develops perceptual awareness and enjoyment of
art
- Begins to make new colors by mixing
- Develops a store of simple art vocabulary
- Recognizes geometric shapes and uses them abstractly
- Learns correct use of materials and takes responsibility
for clean-up
GRADE 2:
- Begins to apply the visual characteristics of design
elements and principles in artwork
- Creates from personal experiences, imagination,
and recall
- Identifies and discusses different kinds of lines
and creates them with different media
- Identifies primary and secondary colors
- Develops cutting skills
- Paints more effectively—soft and hard edges
- Learns basic weaving skills
- Uses paste and glue correctly
- Makes personal choices in selecting printing techniques
GRADE 3:
- Expands creative efforts with the use of personal
experiences, imagination, and recall
- Draws depth with simple one-point perspective
- Explores a variety of techniques and media in various
combinations
- Learns to use correct proportions and details
- Learns to make color choices and tints, tones,
and shades
- Learns to create 3-dimensional and kinetic art
- Understands space (foreground, middleground, and
background)
- Develops an appreciation toward art history and
aesthetics (such as respect for art monuments)
GRADE 4:
- Applies basic elements and principles of design
to artworks based on imagination and observation
- Draws basic shapes and changes them to 3-dimensional
drawings and solid forms
- Begins basic two-point linear perspective
- Focuses on sketching techniques
- Uses colors and values to express mood
- Respects originality (no tracing or copying) in
own visual artworks and artworks of others
- Attempts creative lettering styles
- Develops a positive attitude toward viewing and
appreciating other artworks
GRADE 5:
- Expresses imagination from an expanded store of
knowledge
- Begins to show a degree of craftsmanship
- Demonstrates ability in design by variation in
lines, shapes, color, sizes, and textures
- Applies basic design principles (balance, repetition,
dominance, accent, unity)
- Explores sculpting methods
- Draws two-point perspective with a variety of ground
levels
- Works with complementary colors to create moods
- Produces simple, practical layouts
- Studies artistic accomplishments of contemporary,
historic, and prehistoric cultures
GRADE 6:
- Uses personal experiences as the catalyst in making
art forms
- Looks for new ways to organize space, using elements
and principles of design
- Understands the role that the visual arts have
played in history
- Learns to make informed aesthetic responses to
artworks
- Mixes colors in more complex ways to make tints,
tones, and shades
- Uses drawing to increase observation skills and
eye-hand coordination
- Recognizes that art communicates feelings and ideas
- Identifies and uses types of brush strokes and
techniques used by skilled artists
