Art Classes Available for Students

Art 1
Open

One Year Course
Prerequisite: None
Content: Students will be introduced to several media
and techniques of art such as drawing, painting, printmaking,
calligraphy, sculpture, computer graphics, etc. The
elements and principles of design will be emphasized
and students will study various art movements, artists,
artworks, and cultures. This course is also open to
grades 7-8.

One Year Course
Prerequisite: Art 1 or Instructor Approval
Content: Students will further develop skills by creating
art using a variety of media and techniques (such as
drawing, painting, printmaking, calligraphy, sculpture,
computer graphics, etc.) and the intentional selection
of elements and principles of design to communicate
an idea. Visual literacy and perception skills will
continue to develop with the historical and cultural
learning of art. This course is also open to grade
8.

Content: Students will demonstrate a higher level of
sophistication and accomplishment using more advanced
techniques and media such as drawing, painting, printmaking,
calligraphy, sculpture, computer graphics, the intentional
selection of elements and principles of design, and
historical and cultural knowledge of art to communicate
an idea or emotion creatively through art.

Ceramics 1
Open to: 10, 11, 12
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: None; priority placement given to juniors
and seniors
Content: Students will develop skills while working
with a variety of techniques of hand-forming objects
from clay such as pinch, coil, slab, drape, and an
introduction to wheel-throwing. Students will also
develop skills using a variety of glaze applications
and demonstrate knowledge of terminology and history
of clay processes.

Ceramics 2

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Ceramics 1
Content: Students will continue to develop skills while
working with a variety of ceramic techniques. These
include coil, slab, drape, pinch and wheel throwing.
They will learn new decorating techniques and firing
processes. Students will also work with experimental
approaches to creating artwork.

Ceramics 3
Open to: 11, 12
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Ceramics 1 and 2 or Instructor Approval
Content: Students will expand their ceramics knowledge
in more advanced technical skills while working with
a variety of ceramic techniques and a variety of clay
bodies. Students will learn a deeper history of ceramics,
develop a portfolio, build a series of pieces and work
to develop an expressive voice. Students will also
gain an understanding in experimental approaches to
creating artwork that becomes a unique signature of
the students’ ability level.

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1, 2, & 3 or Instructor
Approval
Content: Students will demonstrate a more sophisticated
level of mastery in creating sculptural and functional
ceramic artworks. Refining techniques and production
of unique constructions are emphasized as surface enhancements,
combination structures, and glazing techniques are
emphasized. Students will continue to expand portfolio
of work and have opportunities to exhibit work in public
places.

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1, 2, 3, & 4 or Instructor
Approval
Content: Students will continue to gain a mastery of
wheel and hand-building techniques and learn the procedures
of assisting in clay studio management. Mixing of glazes,
loading kilns, operation of pugmill and assisting with
exhibits are part of the curriculum. Exploration of
techniques in pit firing, burnishing, and glaze charting
will be presented. Portfolios will continue to be expanded
and opportunities for individual exhibitions will be
available.

Commercial Art 1

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Art Techniques or Drawing 1
Content: Students will learn basic lettering, layout,
design and poster production. Logo and advertising
design will be studied using a variety of tools including
the computer. Various art styles, including cartooning
and illustration techniques, are explored for impact
on the commercial industry. Historical and contemporary
printing processes are studied and computer software
is introduced to develop layouts and design. An emphasis
on career development opportunities is also presented.

Prerequisite: Commercial Art 1
Content: Students will study lettering, layout and
design, and other studio skills such as printmaking,
and computer graphics as they continue studying various
illustration styles and learn of career possibilities.
Product label design, package layouts, and logo design
skills will be emphasized. Portfolios of work will
be created and opportunities for exhibiting completed
projects will be provided.

Creative Crafts

Content: Students will develop skills while working
with a variety of techniques and media such as ceramics,
fibers, jewelry, mosaics, etc. They will recognize
and demonstrate a working knowledge of the elements
and principles of design and learn about cultural and
historical significance of media and techniques. This
course is also open to grade 8.

Content: Students will demonstrate a higher level of

Drawing 1

Prerequisite: None
Content: Students will focus on drawing techniques,
design, composition, and developing skill in creating
a finished piece of work. They will experiment with
a variety of drawing media and surfaces. Emphasis is
on the ability to express creative ideas in visual
form.

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Drawing 1
Content: Students will use a variety of methods and
materials to further explore the elements and principles
of art as they relate to drawing. Drawing from the
illustrative point of view with an emphasis on technical
skill as well as creative ability is stressed. Originality
of artwork and style is developed with an emphasis
on content. Media used will be ink, ink wash, pencil,
pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, and mixed media.
Students will learn how to dialogue about their artwork,
critique and write artist statements. A portfolio of
artwork will be created with opportunities to display
work in public facilities.

Multi-Media Design
Open to: 10, 11, 12,
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: None
Content: Students will explore a wide variety of mediums
and learn techniques for creating two and three dimensional
designs in art. Elements and principles of art will
be taught as students learn the historical and cultural
components that exemplify the media studied. Sample
projects may include, but are not limited to: collage,
painting, printmaking, jewelry-making, drawing, scratch-art,
sculpture, and fiber art.

Painting 1

Prerequisite: Art Techniques or Drawing 1, Instructor
Approval
Content: Students will experiment with various techniques
and mixed media as they explore composition in art.
This course emphasizes color theory, textural grounds
in composition, and application of the elements and
principles of design. Color mixing in transparent and
opaque mediums will be practiced. Some of these can
include oil, acrylic, watercolor, dye, inks, tempera,
or other materials. An emphasis will be placed on gaining
an understanding of control of the medium applications.
A portfolio of student progress will be kept and opportunities
to display finished pieces in public facilities will
also be provided.

Prerequisite: Painting 1, Instructor Approval
Content: Students will develop individual painting
techniques including more in-depth painting experimentation
with opportunities for advancing in both transparent
and opaque painting. Advanced painting curriculum offers
the student opportunities to explore alternative painting
styles in realism, abstractionism, expressionism, cubism,
surrealism and impressionism. Techniques such as collage,
assemblage, airbrush, batik, and mixed media methods
will also be available. Thematic styles and production
are emphasized as students work to develop their own
voice in visual expression. Portfolios are created
with many opportunities for exhibiting work in public
places.

Beginning Photography
1

Prerequisite: None
Content: Students will be introduced to the history
and workings of the camera, equipment, and procedures
used in developing and printing of film. Students will
explore creative ways to communicate through photographic
compositions and special techniques of developing and
printing. A 35mm camera is required. This course is
also open to grade 8.

Beginning Photography
2
Open to: 9
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Beginning Photography or Instructor Permission
Content: Students will advance from Beginning Photography
1 and focus on depth of study of the camera, equipment,
and procedures used in developing and printing of film.
Students will further explore creative ways to communicate
through photographic compositions and special techniques
of developing and printing. A 35mm camera is required.
This course is also open to grade 8.

Photography 1

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: None
Content: Photography 1 is an introductory course to
35mm SLR camera operation, care and maintenance. The
history of photography will be explored along with
various techniques used by the early photographers.
Students will utilize light meters, focusing systems,
aperture and shutter speeds. Film type, exposure, development
processes and care of 35mm film will be emphasized.
Students will identify enlarger parts and functions,
explore basic printmaking methods, utilize filters,
dodging and burning techniques. Students will incorporate
the art elements and principles by exploring composition,
depth of field, still photography and action photography.
Mounting artwork and displaying final photographs will
be emphasized. A 35mm SLR adjustable lens camera is
required.

Photography 2

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Photography 1 or Instructor Approval
Content: Photography 2 is the first of the advanced
photo courses. Students will explore advanced film
exposure, printmaking methods and chemical print manipulation.
Students will continue incorporating the art elements
and principles by exploring composition, available
light, advanced action photography, portraiture and
an introduction to digital imaging. Students will utilize
a bed/negative scanner and/or digital camera to demonstrate
basic skills in Adobe Photoshop, or other imaging software,
and produce quality digital prints. Students will utilize
spotting, mounting and displaying final prints, as
well as producing a final portfolio. A 35mm SLR adjustable
lens camera is required.

Photography 3

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Photography 2 or Instructor Approval
Content: Photography 3 is an advanced course that offers
the student experience using various film types, advanced
alternative photography and various camera formats
relating to the commercial photography industry. Students
will explore fine art portraiture, basic studio lighting
techniques and color principles through means of digital
imaging and Adobe Photoshop, or other imaging software.
Students will be expected to mat or frame final artworks
and create a final print portfolio, resume and artist
statement. A 35mm SLR adjustable lens camera is required.

Photography 4

One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Photography 3 or Instructor Approval
Content: Photography 4 is an advanced course that offers
the student experience taking studio photographs, creating
advertising media with their own photographs and control
exposures using a variety of film formats. Students
will explore advanced color principles, production,
evaluation and correction of color printing. Students
will demonstrate proficiency in using image manipulation
programs, controlling exposures using a digital camera
and control print quality, including large format.
Students will be expected to mat or frame final artworks,
create a resume, artist statement and a final digital
print portfolio. A 35mm SLR adjustable lens camera
is required.

Photography 5
Open to: 11, 12
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Photography 4 or Instructor Approval
Content: Photography 5 is an advanced course in which
the student will produce professional photographic
prints, fine tune film exposure, create an individual
imagery style and mount an exhibition of their photographs.
Students are expected to work independently. Students
will also create a marketable product by utilizing
imaging technology and reproducing photographic media.
Students will be expected to research and comprehend
the photography market and the technology as used in
industry standards. Students will explore employability
skills, conduct a job search, write a resume and create
an electronic portfolio. A 35mm SLR adjustable lens
camera is required.

Photography 6
Open to: 12
One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Photography 5 or Instructor Approval
Content: Photography 6 is an advanced course in which
the student will explore advertising media, work extensively
in both studio and other environments, and explore
career pathways via internet. Students will research
entrepreneurship and comprehend how photographic imaging
relates to career pathways including printing, graphic
arts and journalism. Students will participate in an
internship, co-op training or observation within the
professional photographic or graphics industry that
offers the student experience using various film types,
advanced alternative photography and various camera
formats relating to the commercial photography industry.
Students will create a final professional portfolio,
update their resume and artist statement, and include
a letter of recommendation. A 35mm SLR adjustable lens
camera is required.

Studio Design/Art - Drawing, Advanced Placement® (Course
may be transferable to college credit)

One Year Course (2 semesters)
Prerequisite: Commercial Art, or Drawing 2, 3 or 4,
and Instructor Approval
Content: This course prepares students for the AP® Studio
Design/Art College Board portfolio examination. Students
will develop portfolios to demonstrate their knowledge
of selected areas in the discipline of drawing and/or
painting styles. Areas to be covered will include light
source and shade, line quality, textures, rendering
of form, composition, surface manipulation and illusion
of depth. Concepts of design will also be integrated
along with elements and principles of art. These will
be submitted by portfolio for assessment in breadth
of understanding as well as concentration of drawing
and/or painting strategies and creativity.
$30 materials cost, plus additional costs of final
portfolio submission.
Studio Design/Art - 2D Design, Advanced Placement® (Course
may be transferable to college credit)
Open to: 11, 12
One Year Course (2 semesters)
Prerequisite: Commercial Art or Painting 1-2, 3-4,
or Drawing 2-3, and Instructor Approval
Content: This course prepares students for the AP® Studio
Design/Art College Board portfolio examination. Students
will develop portfolios to demonstrate their knowledge
of selected approaches in the discipline of 2-D design.
Content areas will include compositional studies in
line, shape, form, illusion of motion and space, pattern,
texture, value and color. Students will be asked to
demonstrate these concepts using such forms as graphic
design, typography, photography, printmaking, and mixed
media. Artwork demonstrating specific areas of concentration
and breadth of understanding are submitted as a portfolio
for AP assessment.
$30 materials cost, plus additional costs of final
portfolio submission.
Studio Design/Art - 3D Design, Advanced Placement® (Course
may be transferable to college credit)
Open to: 11, 12
One Year Course (2 semesters)
Prerequisite: Ceramics 2, 3, or 4, and Instructor Approval
Content: This course prepares students for the AP® Studio
Design/Art College Board portfolio examination. Students
will develop “Ceramic Portfolios” to demonstrate
their knowledge of a variety of ceramic constructions
and glazing applications. Both wheel forming and hand-building
of ceramic artworks will be created. Advanced knowledge
in developing a variety of functional and sculptural
artworks in clay bodies will be studied in depth. A
concentration of experimental approaches in various
firing techniques and glaze applications will be developed
through independent charting and time logs. Decoration
techniques and surface manipulations will also be encouraged
as students develop a unique style of self-expression.
Slides, as well as original pieces must be submitted
for portfolio assessment for this art discipline.
