It is the philosophy of our department that art education is
fundamental to human growth and provides students with intellectual,
creative, and emotional experiences that connect them to a common
core of knowledge. Art provides invaluable opportunities
for students to use their imagination and problem solve
using their own creativity. Art allows a forum for expression
of the human spirit and validation of feelings in studying,
creating and responding to art. Whether art is being pursued
as a career or simply being studied as an opportunity to develop
avocational pursuits, art education will heighten an appreciation
for visual literacy and the challenges of creative self-expression.
Art experiences in the schools are valid to students because
it gives them an opportunity to:
- express visual ideas

- develop aesthetic sensitivity and understanding
of past and present art
- value art as an important realm of human experience
- cultivate attitudes and desires to protect and
improve the visual environment
- analyze the structure of a work of visual art
- promote critical thinking skills
- evaluate a work of visual art
- expand ability to communicate in a non-verbal
manner
- expand the ability to perceive, interpret perceptions,
and make aesthetic judgments
- develop an appreciation for art created by
people from other cultures
- develop a desire for continued artistic experiences
and expression
- reveal and develop artistic talent
- exhibit personal artwork in public places
- enrich ability to perceive, understand and appreciate
life
