Art Parents are a valuable resource to the school and to our
classroom teachers. Parents who have an appreciation of art
and understand the benefits of art in the education of our children
are recruited to assist elementary classroom teachers.
Workshops can be held at your school to unite your Art Parents
and review curriculum . We encourage each elementary school
to have one Art Parent Coordinator who can serve as a liaison
between the principal, teachers, and Art Cottage.
Since our district does not employ elementary art teachers, we have
provided a strong elementary art curriculum that is fun to teach and
provides an excellent foundation for a discipline-based art education
program. Art Parents work directly with the classroom teachers to
coordinate art curriculum ideas that correspond to units and
lessons being taught in other disciplines. It is also important
to realize that art lessons themselves are a valuable component in
teaching critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and visual
literacy skills.
Art Parents provide the perfect resource for assisting the classroom
teacher in obtaining and organizing various supplies needed for art
lessons. It is also helpful to have an additional set of hands
available as the lesson progresses and students may need help.
Art Parents are wonderful at organizing the completed projects
for display and can assist in exhibiting the students’
artwork. Many Art Parents have also been instrumental in organizing
a "Festival of the Arts" or an evening to celebrate the arts.
Student artwork is placed on exhibit; dance and music can also
be scheduled and students feel a wonderful sense of raised self-esteem
as they see their artwork on public display.
