Extended Leaves

Certified employees may be granted leaves of absence without pay for up to one (1) year. A professional employee returning from this extended leave shall be assigned to a position at the same school and the same teaching field, if available, as that which s/he held before commencement of the leave.

Leaves of absence without pay for professional development employment opportunities that are mutually beneficial to the employee and the District may be granted by the Superintendent for up to one (1) year. As a general rule, the District will not grant requests in which the employee wishes to take the same, a very similar, or an administrative position in another school district. A professional employee returning from this extended leave shall be assigned to a position at the same school and the same teaching field, if available, as that which s/he held before commencement of the leave. All rights of renewable contract status, retirement, accrued sick leave, salary schedule placement and other benefits provided herein shall be preserved and available to the professional employee upon his or her return to the District. Professional employees who participate in District-provided insurance programs may continue to participate during the leave of absence by paying the premiums for such insurance coverage. Payments must meet COBRA regulations.

For all extended leaves, the employee shall notify the Superintendent of his or her intent to return or not to return to the District by March 1 or by a date mutually agreed to by the Superintendent and the employee. Failure of the employee to meet the notification of intent deadline will release the District from any obligation to continued employment of the employee.

Parental Leave

A professional employee shall be allowed a leave of absence for child rearing purposes for up to one (1) year without pay. Upon return from such leave, the professional employee shall be provided, if appropriate, with a position similar to the one held prior to the commencement of the leave. All rights of renewable contract, retirement, accrued sick leave, salary schedule placement, and other benefits provided herein shall be preserved and available to the professional employee upon his/her return to active duty with the District.

Professional employees who are participating in District-provided insurance programs may continue to participate during the leave of absence by paying the premiums for such insurance coverage.

Military Leave

Employees who are inducted into the U.S. Armed Forces or who are reserve members of the U.S. Armed Forces obligations in compliance with state and federal laws. These employees may use accrued personal/vacation leave but are not required to do so. At the conclusion of the leave, employees generally have the right to return to the same position held prior to the leave or to positions with equivalent seniority, pay and benefits. The District will pay the difference between military pay and regular wages/salary for up to ten (10) days of military leave in any one year. The Superintendent, or designee, may extend the number of days that may be allowed for military leave. Whenever the daily compensation rate for military service is less than the daily compensation for assigned position, the district will pay the difference to the employee.

Employees are asked to complete the Leave of Absence Request form and copy of Active Duty Orders along with leave paper work. Employees are to notify their supervisors as soon as they are aware of the military obligation.

Questions regarding the District’s military leave policy, applicable state and federal laws and continuation of benefits should contact the Employment and Benefits department.
