Parent/Guardian Responsibilities & the Transportation System

  1. Parents/guardians are encouraged to:
    1. Understand and support District rules and policies, regulations and principles of school bus safety.
    2. Cooperate with school officials in promoting safe and efficient student transportation.
    3. Support efforts to improve school bus safety.
    4. Communicate safety concerns to school administrators.
    5. Assist their children in understanding safety rules and encouraging them to abide by the rules.
    6. Support safe riding practices and reasonable discipline efforts.
    7. Monitor school bus stops whenever possible.
  2. Parents/guardians must understand that students who ride school buses must obey all laws, rules, and regulations governing student transportation. School bus riding privileges may be suspended or terminated for repeated failure to follow applicable student transportation laws, rules, and regulations.
  3. Parents/guardians should recognize their responsibilities for the actions of their children.
  4. Parents/guardians must be aware of the dangers involved in and around loading and unloading zones, including the dangers of loose clothing, clothing accessories and other loose personal items.
  5. Parents/guardians are responsible for:
    1. The care, supervision, and behavior of their children prior to loading and after unloading from a school bus operated in regular route, special education, career education, or similar type services.
    2. Getting their children safely to a designated school bus stop on time (no less than five (5) minutes and no more than ten (10) minutes before the scheduled pick up time) and having the children dressed in clothing appropriate for the weather and season. The school bus will not wait for students not at the loading area when the bus arrives.
    3. Getting their children safely from a designated school bus stop.
    4. Teaching, in conjunction with the school bus driver, their children proper procedures for safely crossing the roadway before loading and after leaving the bus.
    5. Supporting emergency evacuation procedures as prescribed by state law, rules, and regulations and District rules and regulations.
  6. Parents/guardians have an obligation to respect the rights and privileges of others.
  7. Parents/guardians should be knowledgeable about the traffic laws regarding when to stop for school buses.
    1. On a roadway that is three (3) lanes or less, both the oncoming traffic and traffic following the bus must stop when the overhead red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
    2. On a roadway that is four (4) or more lanes, only the traffic following the bus must stop. Parents/guardians should be cautious and be prepared to stop when the yellow overhead lights are flashing on a school bus, knowing that children are in the area.
  8. Parents/guardians should be made aware of section 18-1522, Idaho Code, regarding unauthorized school bus entry. It reads:
    1. A person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor if that person:
      1. Enters a school bus with intent to commit a crime;
      2. Enters a school bus and disrupts or interferes with the driver; or
      3. Enters a school bus and refuses to disembark after being ordered to do so by the driver.
    2. School districts shall place notices at the entrance to school buses which warn against unauthorized school bus entry.
  9. The parent/guardian of a student who voluntarily attends school outside of his/her attendance zone shall assume the responsibility of providing his/her student's own transportation.
