Community Education Programs
Volunteer Instructor Spotlight
Laura Canales
Laura
Canales got the ‘bug’ to help small businesses
when she lived in Florida and taught basic bookkeeping
seminars through the Small Business Development
Center at Florida State University. With her experience
in accounting and taxes, Laura had the knowledge to
help small business owners be successful, but realized
introductory classes only scratched the surface.
After moving to Boise in 1999, Laura met a Certified
Public Accountant who was teaching classes for the
Community Education Program through the Boise School
District. When she learned the instructor was leaving,
Laura jumped at the opportunity to take over her classes!
She could teach small business owners the skills they
needed to be successful and be available for follow-up
support. “As a small business owner myself, I
could lead by example,” states Laura.
Laura continually learns from the questions her students
ask in Community Education classes. “In finding
answers for them, I learn more and can share more.” She
also encourages her students to pass on what they have
learned to others; give another small business owner
tips or point them toward Community Education classes
for more information.
When not teaching, Laura is always learning something
new herself. She took up fencing while living in England
and learned to rollerblade when she moved to Boise.
Last year she had her first golf lesson and has been ‘hooked’ ever
since. Laura believes, you can always learn something
new or just try something out. “You never know
how much fun you will have and Community Education
is just the place to get your feet wet.”
Laura’s next class, Accounting for Small Business,
will begin on Thursday, April 10 from 7 - 8 p.m. at
West Jr. High.
