Course Description
Open to: Grades 11, 12 One Semester Course
Prerequisite: Ceramics 1 and Ceramics 2 or Instructor Approval
Content: (Ceramics Three and Four) These semester courses are courses
in working with clay as a art medium. Various clay decorating,
forming and firing techniques will be explored. The course will
include both hand building and wheel throwing techniques of creation.
Hand building techniques will include pinch, coil, and slab built
methods. Decoration techniques will include under glaze, carving,
sculpting and glazes. Firing could be either stoneware or earthenware
temperatures. Material cost for this course is $25. This course
fulfills the humanities credit towards graduation.
Major Concepts/Philosophy:
The purpose of this program is to create opportunities for personal
expression though working with clay. Different clay bodies,
decoration techniques and firing processes will be explored as
students
work through ceramics one thru six. The history of Ceramics,
Art History,
Aesthetics and Art appreciation will be emphasized as students
make hands on art projects. Higher order thinking skills will
be encouraged as students plan, design and create. Ceramics
gives
students who are new to art classes, as well as experienced
art students a chance to further and develop their self esteem
and
expression capabilities. Students will also learn how to critique
works of art. Students will compare and contrast art forms
and interpret other works of art. Students will also write artist
statements about their own work. Students will create representational
images.
The semester courses that comprise this program when offered
at the high school level: Ceramics 1, Ceramics 2, Ceramics 3, Ceramics
4, Ceramics 5, and Ceramics 6. Studio Activities:
Studio activities are an integral part of this program and provide
instruction in the tools, materials, processes and equipment
found in general use in pottery studios in both private and
public institutions.
