Boise School District Elementary Curricular Objectives

ART
Instruction will be provided for the student to:

1 SENSORY PROPERTIES
a. identify and name the elements of design (texture, line, shape, form, and color).
b. identify straight, curved, and bent lines.
c. identify horizontal, vertical, and diagonal line directions.
d. explain the difference between geometric and organic shapes.
e. explain the difference between shape and form.
f. identify and name the primary and secondary colors.
g. differentiate between warm and cool colors.
h. differentiate between deep and shallow space.
i. identify negative space.
j. identify actual and created textures.
k. identify the elements of design in their environment.
2 FORMAL PROPERTIES
a. explain how the elements of design have been used to create balance, repetition, pattern, rhythm, movement, center of interest, unity, and focal points in their artwork or the artwork of others.
b. explain how the elements of design have been used in the environment to create balance, repetition, pattern, rhythm, movement, focal points and unity in their environment.
3 TECHNICAL PROPERTIES
a. use a variety of media to trace and draw straight, curved and bent lines, geometric and organic shapes, created textures, and forms.
b. experiment with a variety of media (crayons, pencils, markers, paints, etc.) and tools (brushes, sticks, Q-tips, sponges, papers, fingers, etc.).
c. use different media, tools, and techniques to express ideas, experiences, feelings and stories.
d. create designs using a variety of media, tools, and techniques.
e. use art media and tools in a safe and responsible manner.
4 EXPRESSIVE PROPERTIES
a. demonstrate and explain how the different media, tools and techniques were used to communicate their ideas, experiences, feelings, and stories.
b. respond verbally how they feel about an artwork.
c. discuss an artwork using their knowledge of the elements and principles of design, media, tools, and techniques used by the artist.
d. demonstrate an understanding that there are various purposes for creating works of visual art.
