Summer Program

WHO MAY TAKE THIS CLASS – MINIMUM AGE

The course is available to persons between the ages of 14½ and 21 inclusive (as of two days before the session). STUDENTS MUST BE AT LEAST 14½ YEARS OF AGE BY May 29, 2008 TO BE ADMITTED INTO THE FIRST SESSION and MUST BE AT LEAST 14½ YEARS OF AGE BY JUNE 25, 2008 TO BE ADMITTED INTO THE SECOND SESSION.

DATES

All Driver Education Summer Sessions are held at Valley View Elementary, 3555 Milwaukee, Boise 83704.

FIRST SESSION – First day of class (classroom only) is Saturday, May 31st. Class and driving resumes on Friday, June 6th and will continue Monday through Friday until the course ends on Thursday, July 3rd.

SECOND SESSION – First day of class (classroom only) is Friday, June 27th. Class and driving resumes on Monday, July 7th and will continue Monday through Friday until the course ends on Friday, August 1st.

REGISTRATION

Registration packets may be picked up at the student’s school or printed from the web site. No later than Wednesday, March 5th the registration form must be completely filled out and signed. The registration is to be turned in to your school office. The Verification of Attendance letter will be attached at your school. Private school students must obtain this letter from your school and attach it to the application. Private school students turn in their application to Valley View Elementary School. DO NOT PAY ANY FEES AT THIS TIME. The registration fee of $185.00 will be collected at ORIENTATION DAY on Saturday, April 19th.

A list of students who have correctly registered for the available spaces will be posted at all Boise District secondary schools on March 18th, 2008. Do not purchase your permit from the DMV until you have checked to see if your name is on the list.

COSTS

All students will be charged $185.00 to take Driver Education. This fee will be collected on Saturday, April 19th at Orientation Day. This fee can be paid with check, money order, or cash. We are not able to accept debit or credit cards for payment. Checks or money orders need to be made out to BOISE PUBLIC SCHOOLS and must indicate the name of the student. Only one check or money order per student, please. All checks must have pre-printed name, address, and telephone number on them. Money orders must have the name, address, and telephone number of the payer on them. Checks returned to the District for non-sufficient funds or closed accounts will result in loss of class slot and/or enrollment.

The cost of the Driver Education Permit is $33.50. This fee will be paid directly to the Ada County Driver’s License Department at 7200 Barrister. This fee is non-refundable. They will give the eye test, collect the fee and issue the receipt for the Driver Education permit. Checks for the permit should be made out to “Ada County Sheriff".

GETTING A PERMIT

Each student will need to obtain a permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles at 7200 Barrister (right across from the Boise Towne Square Mall). The following dates are when this should be done:

Before 4:00 p.m. by legal last name

March 24 A - D
  March 25 E - J
  March 26 K - N
  March 27 O - T
  March 28 U - Z
  April 1 - 4 Make up

The DMV requires ALL of the following items before issuing a permit:

  • (1) Certified Birth Certificate
  • Photo ID (yearbook or activity card)
  • Glasses or contacts if needed
  • Permit fee of $33.50
  • Verification of School Attendance Form, properly signed. This form will be sent with your application and forwarded to the DMV. Private school students must obtain the Verification Letter from their respective schools and attach it to their application when they turn it into Valley View.
  • If parent and student’s last names are different they will need to bring a copy of marriage license or divorce decree, etc. to verify the change. Stepparents will not be accepted as legal guardians without proper paper work.
  • The student’s Social Security number is required.
  • The license application form asks if the applicant's "ability to operate a motor vehicle is affected by any physical or mental condition which brings about momentary or prolonged lapses of consciousness or control?" (Examples: epilepsy or seizures, insulin-dependent diabetes, multiple sclerosis.) Applicants who answer "yes" to this question must have their physician submit a medical evaluation form.

ORIENTATION DAY

On April 19th at Valley View Elementary School (3555 N Milwaukee) all students are required to attend the Orientation Day. The $185 fee will be collected, class assignments will be made, and an overview of the program will be presented. First session students attend the 9:00 orientation. Second session students attend the 1:00 orientation. We suggest that students be at Valley View prior to the starting time of 9:00 a.m. for the first session and 1:00 p.m. for the second session. There are only 180 slots available for each session. As many as 250 students register for these 180 slots. Any student who does not get into the first session must come back at 1:00 to sign up for the second session. Orientation Day activities may take up to two (2) hours to complete. Please plan accordingly. Students who do not attend the orientation on April 19th will lose their class slot and be placed on a waiting list.
CLASS TIME SLOTS WILL BE ASSIGNED ON A FIRST COME – FIRST SERVED BASIS

Class time slots are: 7:00-10:00, 10:00-1:00, 1:00-4:00. This three hour block is for classroom and driving.

REFUNDS

Students who will not be in the Driver Education program and have paid their fees must contact the Driver Education office (854-6370 at Valley View, 3555 N Milwaukee) prior to 3:00 p.m. on May 16th to receive a 100% refund. If they contact the Driver Education office prior to 3:00 p.m. on May 23rd, a 50% refund will be issued. AFTER MAY 23rd, NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED.
