SUMMER 2008 COURSE OFFERINGS

Each offering listed is available on a credit or non-credit basis. The credit costs are payable to the university or college granting the credit. Registration for college credit will be done at the first session of the class. After reviewing the course offerings, please move to the course registration form and identify the course(s) in which you wish to enroll. Be sure to include all personal information, including your e-mail address and click on the Submit It Button. Classes are filled on a space available basis.

Cost per credit hour: NNU $60, BSU $50. With the exception of Literacy courses, most classes are offered through both institutions.

SPECIAL SUMMER OFFERING
Business / Education X-Change Summer 2008 Workshop
Tuesday and Wednesday, August 5th & 6th, 2008
Open to Intermediate (grades 5 & 6) and Secondary Teachers
One (1) Graduate Credit - Provided (no cost)
Have you ever wondered how successful businesses are organized? How they stay competitive? What skills their employees need to be successful? This program will feature an up-close, hands-on look at what industry does and how we can prepare our students for success. The workshop will highlight Treasure Valley industries and will focus on strengthening the school / community relationship. Participants will visit local companies and through presentations, onsite tours and small group discussions explore the school - business relationship. Community business partners will be clustered by Career Pathway that represents their industry. Each participant will be able to explore two Career Pathway clusters. Teachers will identify Pathways that are of interest for site visitations and presentations. Pre- Registration Required- Space Limited to 50 Boise and 50 Meridian Teachers. Full registration will be sent to the first 50 who pre-register.

School Safety: The Boise School District’s Employees and students are provided with a safe environment in which to work and learn (Goal 3).

FIRST AID FOR THE CLASSROOM TEACHER
This course will include a core program of respiratory emergencies, including CPR techniques and a multimedia presentation of first aid materials. 1 credit. Appropriate for all school personnel.

RIGHT RESPONSE (formerly S.E.C.U.R.E.)
The best crisis to deal with is the one which does not actually occur! The Right Response. is a training program for elementary and secondary school staff. It is a proactive approach to crisis management and looks at the crisis holistically to prevent future crisis. Physical interventions are one of the methods taught as a means of de-escalating a situation. 1 credit

POWER OF PLATO CLASS 1, 2 & 3
All teachers will need a refresher course before being allowed to begin PLATO in the fall. Receive revised worksheets on how to set up the program, curriculum guides, and information on how to utilize the PLATO programs to enhance your curriculum. Support will be available in the afternoons during the school year. For a PLATO Three credit - you will have to look into customizing the curriculum and build your own assignments. Materials needed: A class list and spring ISAT scores. 1 credit. Fulfill you credit hours by attending any of the class sessions.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CORE CLASSES
(These classes fulfill course work required for the Induction Professional Development Core program)

A. INSTRUCTION: EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO ENGAGE LEARNERS
This course is designed to assist elementary and secondary teachers in designing and delivering effective instruction. Participants will explore methods for engaging all students and optimizing achievement. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the Instruction component of the Professional Development Core. Materials needed: A copy of the text you are currently using or unit materials (at least two units) that you would like to work on. 1 credit.

B. EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: IT’S NO SECRET
This course assists elementary and secondary teachers in designing strategies to establish and communicate effective classroom expectations and procedures. Teachers will investigate how focusing on effective classroom environments enhances student involvement and achievement. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the classroom Management component of the Professional development Core. 1 credit.

C. PLANNING: A BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS
This course is designed to assist the elementary and secondary practitioners with long range planning, integration of curriculum and thoughtful approaches to effective sequencing of required subject matter. THE IDAHO COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY COURSE: STANDARD I-III
STATE APPROVED LITERACY COURSE DESIGNED FOR K-8 GRADE

Completion of the state requirement for literacy certification can be done by use of university credit (cost $50 per credit) or through Verification of Course Completion letter (no cost). **Non-Boise District educators will be assessed a $50.00 administration fee per standard**

THE IDAHO COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY COURSE: STANDARD I, Phonological Awareness
STATE APPROVED LITERACY COURSE DESIGNED FOR K-8 GRADE.
This course will cover the Interrelation of language acquisition and literacy, Phonological awareness, Phonics and Decoding, Enhancing Fluency, Spelling - Stages of development, Reading Indicators for grade levels, Best practices in reading instruction.

WEB ASSISTED INSTRUCTION
This web-assisted course will have a limited number of class and group meetings
complimented by a series of web-based lessons and activities.

WHAT WORKS IN SCHOOLS
This course is designed for elementary or secondary teachers who want to learn more about research regarding factors which drive an effective, high achieving school. The course is “web-assisted” and utilizes internet communication as well as face-to-face meetings. What Works in Schools is based on Bob Marzano’s work presented in his book Classroom Instruction That Works. The first meeting will be organizational in nature and will be in the Professional Technical Building’s computer lab. Teachers each receive a copy of Classroom Instruction That Works and a CD with video lesson segments that illustrate the 9 research-based instructional strategies that positively impact student achievement. Teachers work independently to view the video segments and respond to questions related to the critical attributes of each segment’s contents. Work can be done at any computer station that has an internet link, as this is a web assisted class. Participants will be asked to attend 3 meetings/discussion groups to share ideas about the research-based strategies. Times and locations of classes will be set at the first meeting. 1 credit.

WRITE TO TEACH SUMMER 2008 (Joint class with Meridian District)
This summer workshop class is a joint effort between the Boise and Meridian school districts. The workshop consists of writing activities that incorporate the writing process and other writing models. The course will focus heavily on the teacher as a writer model. A wealth of ideas and lessons for teaching writing for proficiency and enrichment will be provided. A field trip is planned and visits from local writing groups are scheduled. Jonelle Warnock from the Boise School District and a Meridian teacher will facilitate. 2 credits. Class limited to 25 participants.

THE WRITING ROAD TO READING
This course is the dynamic introduction to the Spalding Method of phonics for teaching spelling, speech, writing, and reading. The Spalding Method uses a kinesthetic approach teaching students to hear, say and write simultaneously. 3 credits.

PHASE I SIOP®: AN INTRODUCTION TO SHELTERED INSTRUCTION
Participants will interactively begin exploring sheltered instruction while looking at effective classroom strategies for at-risk students, with a special emphasis on English language learners and native English speakers with limited academic vocabularies. Class will be facilitated by current practitioners and will introduce the participant to the SIOP framework. Great, useful materials provided. 1 credit.

PHASE II SIOP®: SHELTERED INSTRUCTION LESSON PLAN DEVELOPMENT & IMPLEMENTATION
Participants will have fun exploring culture while reflecting on applications to the classroom. We will also work on fine tuning content and language objectives, and dig in deep with lesson plan development as guided by the SIOP framework. Even more wonderful materials provided. 1 credit.

PHASE III SIOP®: SHELTERED INSTRUCTION OBSERVATION & PEER COLLBORATION
Participants will come together as reflective practioners. We will really get our feet with the sheltered instruction protocol for lesson plan development and collaborative observations. Participants will have an opportunity to observe SIOP trained teachers while becoming a more effective peer observer. Additional practice with language objectives will be emphasized. Amazing Materials Provided. 1 credit.

PHASE IV SIOP®: CLASSROOM APPLICATION OF THE SIOP MODEL
This course will focus on applying components of the SIOP model to lesson design. Participants will create, share, and evaluate lessons focused on intentional use of sheltered instruction strategies. The lessons will be intentionally created for use in teachers’ current teaching positions. Note: Please bring lesson planning materials to class! 1 credit.

SPANISH FOR EDUCATORS
Learn Spanish through best practices in language acquisition. Not only will you acquire skills in a new language but you will also gain instructional strategies that will add to your classroom repertoire. Students will learn vocabulary through activities using literature as well as experience language immersion. This is a beginning level Spanish class. 1 credit.

This is a continuation of Spanish for Educators. Learn Spanish through best practices in language acquisition. Students will learn vocabulary through activities using Total Physical Response, sheltered instruction as well as experience language immersion. Students will build on vocabulary from Spanish I as well as learn more strategies for communicating with parents and a more in depth study of Spanish grammar. CALLIGRAPHY IN THE CLASSROOM - A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF LETTERING
An exploration of the progression of ancient letter forms including hands-on activities in cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese Brush, Greek, Roman and Versal lettering. Appropriate for art/humanities teachers or those interested in the historical background of the alphabet.. Materials fee $15.00. 1 credit

BEGINNING BOOKMAKING
Learn the tools, materials, and techniques of bookbinding! In this intensive introductory class, we will make several blank books including accordion, pop-up, pamphlet and Japanese bound as well as both cloth-covered and non-adhesive. Participants will have an opportunity to study different paper types and weights. We will also explore creating books in Publisher and using the scanner and digital camera for bookmaking. 1 credit. Lab Fee $15.00.

SMARTBOARDS - LET’S GET STARTED
Learn to harness the vast capabilities of your SMARTBOARD interactive whiteboard. Instructors will quickly learn the basics of using the board and move to advanced features that allow for visually engaging integration into district and state curriculum. You will walk away with lessons to use this fall that will engage and challenge all your students! Participants need to have access to SMARTBOARD for class assignments. 1 credit.

INFORMATION NAVIGATOR

The Information Navigator program is an 18 hour, 1 credit course that provides basic technology proficiency for staff and teachers. The class is comprised of 4 required components and one elective component. Only one elective is required, however, you may take as many as you wish. Classes will be held at various times at North Junior High, computer lab, room 211 (upstairs). Credit is available through BSU or NNU. The District will pay the credit for District employees.
