Federal Programs

Student ArtFederal Programs provide multiple areas of support under the guidelines of federal legislation. The No Child Left Behind Act outlines significant changes to past legislation directly impacting Boise School District’s federally funded programs. (For additional information on No Child Left Behind, please visit: http://www.nochildleftbehind.gov/)

Boise School District projects funded by federal programs include the following:

Title I

Title I provides support to over 7,000 students at 13 elementary and 2 secondary schools in reading and math. Highly qualified certified and classified personnel provide instruction. Title I schools Schoolwide Improvement Plans (SWIP) define instructional and performance objectives. These plans provide the foundation for decision-making at each site. Title I schools are involved in continuous collaboration and staff development as they work toward school goals supporting district initiatives.

Please visit our Title I web site.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Boise Schools have over 2,900 English language learners from 94 different countries. Our students represent 90 languages and come with various levels of English fluency. English language learners who are still developing their English fluency may attend one of 11 elementary magnet sites, a 7th-12th newcomer school, 6 junior highs, or one of 4 high schools. Assessment and consultation are additionally provided to all schools in the district.

Elementary ELL: 1st through 6th grade English language learners are enrolled in one of 11 magnet sites- Grace Jordon, Horizon, Jefferson, Koelsch, Lowell, Morley Nelson, Mt. View, Taft, Whitney, White Pine, Whittier. Students participate in integrated instruction provided by highly qualified certified and classified staff. Kindergarten students are enrolled in their neighborhood schools unless they have older siblings attending an ELL school.

Secondary ELL: The ELL Program at the secondary level consists of several formats. Students living in the United States two years or less may enroll at the ELL Language Academy located at Boise Language Academy, 334 South Cole Road. This school provides intensive language instruction through content courses and allows students to transition into their new surroundings and home school more effectively.

Other secondary students are supported at their home schools through sheltered content classes and/or ELL study skills classes. These classes provide access to the district curriculum through specialized instructional strategies.

For more information on the ELL program, including the District ELL Handbook and staff information, visit our ELL web site.
