Criteria
for Placement in the Gifted & Talented Program Elementary (K-1) Services
Students in grades K-1 are identified and served in
the regular classroom in collaboration with a gifted
and talented facilitator. Some students in first grade
are in full time gifted combination first/second grade
classrooms at Valley View or Horizon elementary schools.
Elementary (2-6) Services
GATE Pull-out Program
The GATE Pull-out Program is one part of a array of
services to students in our District, serving approximately
675 academically and intellectually gifted/talented
students in grades 2-6. Students can be referred for
evaluation by parents or teachers through the gifted
facilitator in their home school.
Gifted and Talented personnel provide
direct services to these students in part-time pullout
programs and coordinate other activities for them.
Students may also be accelerated if the school and
parents decide the child would be more appropriately
served (physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually)
at a more advanced grade level.

Full time Gifted Classrooms
Full time, multi-age settings for gifted students
are available in classrooms located throughout the
District. Enrollment in these classrooms is on a space
available basis and students must meet the criteria
for the GATE Program. Parents should inform the home
school facilitator and then contact the principal at
the school where they wish to enroll their child.
Curricula for students in these classrooms is based
on the Boise School District's adopted curriculum in
each of the subject areas. These curricula are differentiated
to accommodate the students' needs for an accelerated
pace of instruction and academic rigor and individual
strengths and differences.

Highly Gifted Program
The Elementary level Highly Gifted Program opened
in the 2002-03 school year. Highly gifted children
are those whose intelligence is at the extreme end
of the spectrum. Highly gifted children are often performing
many years above their peers in subject matter and
almost always are early readers. Complicating this
picture is that highly gifted children are often uneven
in their development - performing way ahead in some
areas and at age level (or behind) in others.
This full time program, serving students in grades
1-6 from throughout the District, is located at Collister
Elementary school and Hillside Junior High. Eight teachers
direct the learning activities of these students whose
programs include intensive assessment; subject acceleration,
individualized programming in specialized settings,
and a more rigorous curriculum.
