Mission Statement

To secure qualified substitutes that will provide daily educational instruction or support to students in the absence of a certified teacher or support staff member.

Have you ever wanted to help children learn and succeed? Substitute teaching and/or working as a classified (support) substitute is a wonderful career for those individuals interested in working with Boise School District students. As a substitute, you indicate your interest in the success of the community education team.

There are occasions when staff must be absent; however, their work must go on without interruption. Therefore, when they are unable to serve, substitutes must step in and make valuable contributions. Substitutes are a vital part of our total education program.

As a substitute, you have the flexibility to work on your schedule and receive training.

Qualifications

  • Certified Substitute Requirements:
    • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher or a teaching certificate (preferred)
    • Proof of education (copy of: teaching credential, Bachelor’s Degree or higher, transcripts with Bachelor’s Degree or higher posted)
    • Applicant Employment Reference Form
    • Successful clearance of an FBI criminal background check
    • Mandatory attendance of Boise School District’s Substitute Teacher Training
  • Classified Substitute Requirements:
    • Graduation from high school or GED, 48 college credit hours, OR Associates degree or higher OR the Paraprofessional PRAXIS Exam
    • Proof of education (copy of transcripts or degree)
    • Applicant Employment Reference Form
    • Successful clearance of an FBI criminal background check

Application Requirements

Submitting an application for a substitute position does not guarantee employment.

To apply for a substitute position, you must complete one of the following online applications:

  • Certified Application
    • Complete this application only if you have a current, valid teaching credential. You must also add the applicable substitute job (see job vacancies) to your certified application.
  • Classified Application
    • Complete this application if you do not hold a hold a current, valid teaching credential. You must also add the applicable substitute job (see job vacancies) to your classified application.

IMPORTANT: We ask that you provide a current email address on your application as we conduct most of our communication through email; including the invitation to a substitute orientation.

Orientations

An applicant must attend a mandatory substitute orientation prior to beginning employment as a substitute. To attend an orientation, an applicant must:

  • Complete an online application
  • Submit all the required materials (i.e. proof of education)
  • Receive an invitation from the Substitute Office to attend

Please note that applications will be reviewed in the order in which they were received. Qualified applicants will receive an invitation to attend the substitute orientation. Please know that due to the number of applications we receive, there may be a delay between the application date and the invitation to attend an orientation.

At the orientation, attendees will:

  • View a presentation about substituting in the Boise School District
  • Receive new-hire paperwork such as an I-9 and W-4.
    • Applicants must bring their social security card and photo identification for I-9 and payroll purposes.
  • Be fingerprinted for a criminal background check
    • here is a $40, non-refundable fee for fingerprinting
    • Results may take up to 1 week

Applicants should be prepared to spend 1-2 hours to complete the orientation, complete the new-hire paperwork, and be fingerprinted. In addition, applicants are expected to attend the orientation meeting in appropriate business attire.

Certified Substitute Teacher Training

If a substitute is interested in substituting in certified positions, the substitute must attend a Substitute Teacher Training session. These training sessions are usually scheduled once a month and are three hours in duration. At the training session, attendees will receive training and information regarding classroom management and other techniques to help the substitute be successful in the classroom.

Pay Information

  • Pay Period
    • Substitutes are paid on the 15th of each month for all assignments worked the previous month. For example, a substitute will be paid on February 15th for all assignments worked in January.
  • Daily Pay Definitions
    • Half-Day: assignments that are up to 4 hours in duration
    • Full-Day: assignments over 4 hours in duration
  • Certified Substitute Pay Rate
    • Regular Pay - Substitutes will be paid $75.00 per full day ($37.50 per half day) when working certified positions.
    • Long-Term Pay - Substitutes who work for the same teacher for 10 consecutive days or more (half or full days), will be paid $105.00 per full day ($52.50 per half day) from the beginning of the assignment.
  • Classified Substitute Pay Rate
    • Regular Pay - Substitutes will be paid $65.00 per full day ($32.50 per half day) when working classified positions.
    • Long-Term Pay - Substitutes, who work for the same classified employee for 10 consecutive days or more (half or full days), will be paid $85.00 per full day ($42.50 per half day) from the beginning of the assignment.
