Annual Asbestos Notification

Annual Asbestos Notification

September 2018

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Staff:

Asbestos is an issue that Boise School District’s Facilities and Operations Department has been actively managing for years.

To give some background, asbestos has long been a component of construction materials. Often used for sound absorption, insulation, fireproofing, and decorative plasters, asbestos is used in over 3,000 different products. In 1973, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began limiting the use of asbestos. In 1978, the EPA banned most asbestos products sold as building
materials. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) was enacted in 1986 to evaluate and develop solutions for schools with materials containing asbestos.

The Boise School District buildings were originally inspected in August 1988, and have been inspected every three years thereafter, as required by AHERA. An accredited management planner, hired by the District, used the reports to develop an Asbestos Management Plan. The plan includes notification of parents by letter, training and education for employees, and implementation of procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of the asbestos containing
materials. The plan also provides for schedule surveillance and proper maintenance of asbestos containing materials.

A copy of this Asbestos Management Plan is available for inspection at each school. Specific questions regarding the plan can be directed to Dianna Gerber, Hazardous Materials Coordinator, at 208-854-6749.

The Boise School District will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure children and employees are provided with a safe and healthy environment.
