The Treasure Valley Mathematics &
Science Center (TVMSC) is a partnership program between the Boise
and Meridian School Districts. The school opened in the fall of
2004 and serves area public and non-public school students.
In the 2008 - 2009 school year, TVMSC's 7th - 10th grade cohort levels
will attend TVMSC classes at the original site within Riverglen Junior High School.
TVMSC will also offer 11th - 12th grade cohorts for the program in
designated rooms at Capital High School, as well as two morning
classes at the original Riverglen site.
Hewlett-Packard Corporation has donated over $300,000 for technology
equipment and science supplies. The Micron Technology Foundation,
Inc. has pledged $1 million over a four-year period to fund the
start-up of the Center.
What is the TVMSC?
- TVMSC is a unique learning community that offers opportunities
in mathematics and science education unlike those found in traditional
school settings.
- The curriculum is specifically designed for students with a
strong interest/desire to excel in mathematics and science.
- A key focal point of the instructional program is group and
paired activities that require students to work as a member of
a research team. Students collaborate in posing questions, designing
experiments, acquiring and analyzing data, and finally, presenting
their findings.
- The Center runs half-day programs with students in the
seventh through eleventh grade cohort groups attending either morning
or afternoon sessions.
- Students are not charged tuition for attending TVMSC as this
is a program that provides educational services for identified
instructional needs areas within a public school setting.
Who Can Apply?
- Any public, private, or home-schooled student is eligible to
apply for admittance to the Center.
- Students who are capable of performing at an accelerated
7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade academic level regardless of their
current age or grade level.
Who Should Apply?
Because the TVMSC curriculum is rigorous and challenging, applicants
should be:
- among the most successful in their student body in terms of
academic preparation and test scores, especially in mathematics
and science;
- capable of pursuing a rigorous academic program beyond what
is offered in their current school setting;
- self-motivated with a strong desire to excel in mathematics
and science; and
- comfortable working both independently and in collaboration
with other students.
- interested in receiving high school credit for the courses
taken at TVMSC.
- students who've completed the following mathematics
prerequisites:
What Are The Prerequisites?
Due to the demanding nature of the curriculum, students should
meet the following prerequisites:
- Students entering the 7th-grade cohort must have completed
Accelerated Math 7 or the equivalent.
- Students entering the 8th-grade cohort must have completed
Accelerated Algebra I or the equivalent.
- Students entering the 9th-grade cohort must have completed
Accelerated Geometry or the equivalent.
- Students entering the 10th-grade cohort must have completed
Accelerated Algebra II or the equivalent.
- Students entering the 11th-grade cohort must have completed
Accelerated Math Analysis or the equivalent.
Students who do not meet
these prerequisites may take the necessary courses during summer
school courses that are taught at TVMSC.
