What is AR? (Accelerated Reader)
Accelerated Reader is a computer based supplemental reading
program we offer to encourage students to become lifelong readers.
The classroom teacher sets goals for each student using information
from the STAR reading test. This reading test determines a
reading range based on individual performance. The books in
our library that have quizzes available are marked by a color
code for reading levels. Students are encouraged to check-out
books/titles that have an AR quiz available within their personal
reading range. Students in grades 1 thru 6 are allowed a 3
book limit for library check-outs. We suggest they check-out
at least one AR book per week. The library has free flow times
everyday for those who have finished their books and want more.
Of course, there are many titles in both fiction and non-fiction
to spark the interests of every reader. Our main goal is to
encourage pleasure reading within a schoolwide, incentive based
program. Your child should know their Reading Range.
An Example is 2.5 ---- 3.8 . Ask your student about AR!

School. Not all books have quizzes and for those of you who
visit the Boise Public Library check in the Children's Section
for a list of AR Quiz Titles on-line at Garfield School.

We are encouraging pleasure reading at the student's comfort
reading level first. They will gravitate to more challenging
material as they gain confidence and success.
