What is the Accelerated Reader program?

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a supplemental reading program that many schools in the Boise School District use to supplement the reading program that is already in place.

The STAR reading test is given to the students twice a year and from the results, this program also makes a recommendation concerning a reading level for each student. Based on that recommendation, the teachers encourage their students to choose books that are appropriate for their reading abilities. This helps the students to choose books from the library that will help them to be successful and to improve their reading.

Books that are a part of the AR program have all been labeled. There are different stickers for each level which helps guide the students to easily find books in their level.
(Not all books are a part of the AR program.)

The AR programs works in the following way:

Students come to the library and they find books that are appropriate for their reading level. When a child has read their AR book, they can then take a quiz on that book. This is a great way to measure how the student is reading and how well he/she comprehends what he/she is reading. The goal is that they do well on the quizzes, and their reading ability continues to increase which helps them to be more successful in their studies in the classroom. The students also enjoy getting “points” when they do well on the quizzes, and they can spend those points at the AR cart which has many little things that the students enjoy getting for their hard work.

You are able to find books from the list by the Title, the Author or by the Reading Level. If you go to the Boise Public Library they also have a notebook, located in the children’s room that has the complete list of Hawthorne’s AR books.

Hawthorne Elementary is extremely thankful to the PTO for their support of this program. They supply the money for all AR quizzes purchased throughout the year!
