Thumper

Room 16 Homepage

This is our classroom pet.  His name is Thumper. He was a gift to me when I taught 1st grade in 2000 from Megan.  He earned his name when he would “thump” against the glass to let us know that he was hungry.  In the summer, Thumper spends most of his time in our garden.  Since he is a vegetarian, he is very content among the different types of lettuces.  His two favorite vegetables to eat are zucchinis and tomatoes.

Thumper has a girl friend too.  Her name is Tilly.  She joined Thumper in the fall of 2005. When he came to us, she was undernorished and sickly.  With tender loving care, Tillly is strong, healthy, and sassy.  She loves her summer vacation spot in my garden too. Tilly is a Russian Tortoise too.

Here are some facts about tortoises:

  • A tortoise needs water to survive.
  • The shell is made of the same stuff as your fingernails.
  • They can move faster than you think.
  • They love to dig.  Check out the large claws.
