Dr. Michael A. Fischer serves as Director
of Bands at Hillside Junior High School in Boise, Idaho. Prior
to coming to Hillside, Dr. Fischer taught at the Interlochen
Arts Academy, Boise State University, Baylor University, University
of North Texas, University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Nebraska
City (Nebraska) Public Schools.
Dr. Fischer earned degrees at the University of North Texas
(D.M.A.), University of Nebraska at Omaha (M.M.), University
of Illinois (M.S.M.E.), and Pittsburg (Kansas) State University
(B.M.E.). He has performed with various professional artists
including Luciano Pavarotti, Doc Severson, Ray Charles, Henry
Mancini, Manhattan Transfer, Melissa Manchester, Peter Nero
and Brian Wilson. Dr. Fischer serves as principal tuba with
the Boise Philharmonic and performed as principal tuba with
the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra for several years.
Dr. Fischer serves as Editor
of Pedagogy for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association
Journal. He is published in the Tuba Source Book and
has over 25 arrangements published through Cimarron Music,
Tuba-Euphonium Press and Roncorp Publications.
A strong advocate of new music, Dr. Fischer has collaborated
with composers Barbara York, Lon Chaffin, Kenyon Wilson, Richard
Willis, Jeremy Lane, Stephen Shoop and Kenneth Friedrich to
write new works for tuba and euphonium. In 2004, he premiered Directions for
solo tuba and band by Barbara York with the BSU Symphonic Winds,
directed by Marcellus Brown. Dr. Fischer premiered York’s Concerto
for Tuba and Orchestra in 2005 with the BSU Orchestra,
directed by Craig Purdy.
