JEFFERSON’S RESOURCE ROOM

The Exceptional Child Specialists at Jefferson Elementary are Mrs. Shephard and Mrs. Marsha McKinley.

Students qualify for special education services through a government-mandated sequence of events which includes: 1) documentation of effort to solve the problem in the regular classroom, 2) referral to the school’s Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) for consideration of evaluation, 3) evaluation or further investigation, depending upon the decision of the MDT, 4) discussion of assessment results, 5) pending qualification for special education services, planning of an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), 6) implementation and monitoring of the plan for no longer than one year before a review. Parents are to be involved in the entire process and students may not be placed in a special education program without parental permission.

Students’ special education needs are provided either in the regular classroom (inclusion model) or in small groups outside of the classroom for direct instruction and/or remediation in the areas of reading, math, and written language. The location, duration, and focus of the service is guided by the IEP.

If you have any questions related to special education services, feel free to contact us at Jefferson Elementary (208) 338-3460.
