CLASSROOM POLICIES

DISCIPLINE

Our classroom rules are as follows:

  1. Follow directions.
  2. Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself
  3. Be quiet during silent times.
  4. Raise hand before speaking.
  5. Respect others and their property.
  6. Speak quietly during speaking times.

Failure to follow these rules results in the following:

Each student in the class has been issued 4 cards, green yellow, blue, red and a conduct/missing assignments sheet (see attached sheet for example). Each day the students start out with the green card on top. This stands for an excellent day. If a student breaks a rule I will ask them for their green card. They will then have a yellow card showing. The yellow card is a warning card. If they break the rules a second time I ask for their yellow card and they will now have a blue card showing. A blue card signifies a first consequence. A third time will result in my asking for their blue card and a red one will be showing. This will result in a second consequence. The fourth time a rule is broken, I ask for their red card. This will leave them with an empty packet and a trip to the Principal's office. At the end of each day the class will record, on their conduct sheets, the color they had showing in their packet before dismissal. This sheet goes home every Monday for parent signature. On the bottom of this same sheet will be listed any missing assignments for the preceding week. The student has until Friday to make these up. Any assignments not turned in by Friday will receive a zero.

Possible consequences may include any of the following:

  1. Loss of recess
  2. Note home to parent
  3. Detention

I sincerely believe that every student is capable of being responsible for his/her own actions. Behavior that hinders the class from learning will not be tolerated.

HOMEWORK

Your child will from time to time have home work assignments that will need to be completed. The students are given work time during each academic period. If it is not completed during this time frame it is then homework. My policy on homework is that it is to be on my desk at 8:45 A.M. the next morning. At the end of the week all missing assignments will be recorded on the bottom half of the conduct notice that is sent home on Mondays as discussed in the preceding paragraphs. On-going homework assignments include basic math facts, states and capitals, spelling list words, and at-home reading. Please remember that homework is your CHILD'S responsibility.

ASSIGNMENT BOOKS

Assignment books are required by all students in grades 4, 5 and 6. Your child will write his/her daily assignments in this book each morning. The assignments are posted on the overhead and the students are given a set time period to copy them down. If they have an assignment for homework they are to have a parent initial the particular assignment in their book. If a student hands in an assignment that is incomplete I will ask to see the assignment book. If there are parent initials beside the assignment I will give you a call. Please be certain that the assignment is done before you initial anything. I hope that this procedure will prevent your child from becoming creative with your initials.

GRADES

All subjects in my class are graded on the point system. If a paper has 30 problems it will be worth 30 points. You would see the following on your child's paper if they had no errors: +30/30 = A+. I always put the number of correct responses over the number of possible points. TESTS COUNT DOUBLE. Language papers are required to be done in cursive. On math assignments if your child has a wrong answer it will be circled. If they copied the problem down wrong the whole problem will be circled.

TESTS

I never schedule tests on Mondays. Your child is required to leave the classroom with their textbook the night before a test. I always have a written review one day, followed by an oral review the next day and the test on the third day. The only exception to this is spelling. On Mondays the study sheet will come home, and we will have the mastery tests on Fridays. Your child keeps the same spelling words each week until he/she learns them. They are then replaced by new words.

PROJECTS

Your child will have several projects throughout this school year. More detailed information about these projects will come home at a later date.

REPORT CARDS

The first nine weeks will be a comment only on report cards. However, I will have grades available to you at that time. All other report cards will be graded using percentages that correspond to the letter grades A, B, C, D, or U.

COMMUNICATIONS

Every Monday I update my voice message center. You will be able to hear about all the things that will be taking place in class for the week. This includes field trips, tests, assemblies, etc. Please take a few minutes each Monday to check this out. I put it there for your benefit and it really can answer a lot of your questions. You can reach my voice mail by dialing 338-3406. You will be asked for the mailbox number. It is *(star)880043. At the end of my message you will be able to leave a message if necessary. I try to check my voice mail at noon and 3:30 each day. If it is an emergency my home phone number is 345-3010, but please keep in mind that I try to reserve my evenings for family activities. I also have e-mail. That address is posted below. My email is really the fastest way to communicate with me. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of these policies please contact me at school through my voice mail or any day after 3:15 P.M. I am here most days until 4:30 or 5:00. However, I do occasionally have obligations that make it necessary for me to leave early.
