The chessclub has been voluntarily
directed by W.
Ceglecki since 1979. Chess sets are available for ALL Maple Grove
students to use at
lunchtime. Students in the chessclub are eligible to play in
school tournaments, win prizes, and have their ratings
maintained.
To get into
the chessclub, a student must last 10 moves against Mr. Ceglecki
(without being checkmated). If so, the student receives a shirt,
courtesy of the PTA, and is a member of the club forever. If not,
the student must wait one month to play Mr. C again. This is an
idea adapted from U.S. Grandmaster Larry Evans who says it will add
more prestige and respect and excellence to any chessclub and its
members by making it exclusive to players who really understand the
game and can prove it (or the player must "go back to the drawing
board" and practice for a month.) This rule has been in effect
here since our club's beginning in 1979, and though there may be some
who
do not like the rule, it has accomplished all that Grandmaster Evans
said it would. Our club has produced the State Scholastic
Champion (David Rush) for several years.
Peer instruction is always available, and
Mr. C is always there for any
necessary clarification (his current USCF rating is approximately 1750.)
Membership in our
2003-2004 club was 64 boys and 26 girls.
Membership in our 2004-2005 club was 48 boys
and 24 girls.
Membership in our 2005-2006 club was 41 boys
and 22 girls.
Special thanks to the Maple Grove PTA and
to private donations for sponsorship, who pay for all shirts and prizes
keeping our club absolutely free for members.
