Welcome! This page is meant to give
you a snapshot of the counseling and guidance program at
Mtn. View Elementary. Counseling within an
elementary setting is different from what one would see within a
private agency or community setting. Below ar e areas that I
address within the school setting. You may scroll through the
information on this page and give me a call if you have any questions
(208-854-5700).
School counselors focus on the following areas to provide guidance services
for ALL students.
Focus areas:
- Small groups:I spend about 50% of my time teaching guidance
lessons in each classroom, K-6. The lessons are divided into
the
following units:
- Conflict Management Skills
- Decision Making Skills
- Making Safe Choices/Drug Prevention
- Career Exploration
and Future Planning
- Small groups: Small group counseling is available for various
subjects throughout the school year. This form of counseling
is short term in nature, usually on a schedule of once a
week, for 30 minutes, over a 4 - 6 week time period during
the school day. Groups are created depending upon the needs
of students and in relation to the other services I provide
through the counseling program. Sample group topics I provide
on a yearly basis include, (but are not limited to):
- Divorce/ After Divorce Issues
- Self-Esteem
- Helping New Kids Get Adjusted
- Dealing with family changes
- Stress management
- Building Stronger Friendships
- Building Academic Success
- Individual work with students: The school counseling program
is meant to assist ALL children. While I cannot provide on-going
counseling, I can provide short-term alternatives for students,
when appropriate, to receive individual counseling. When
more attention and intervention is required, I can act as
a referral agent for you to access counseling services within
the community.
- Mentoring: Mountain View has a cooperative mentoring program
where 20-25 students from our school are paired with students
from Capital High School. Mentoring occurs once a week, for
a 45 minute period, in the school, from November – April.
- Parent/Staff Consultation: I am involved in the Parent
Education program through the Boise Schools. I can be a resource
to you for parenting questions as well as social/emotional
concerns for your child. The district offers classes for
parents each fall and spring and can be accessed through
the Boise Schools website.
