The
Garden Club meets on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:15, August through November and March through June. This after-school club
is open to all North Junior High students who have an interest
in growing plants. North
was the only school in Idaho to receive a National Gardening
Association grant in 2006. The $250 grant will be used for
the Club's projects.
Contact Ms.
Ellis for more information.
The two primary projects for the club are the school’s vegetable
garden and the entry area.
Vegetable
Garden: Students created a vegetable garden in Spring, 2005. Community volunteers, donations from local businesses, and a substantial grant from the Student
Council helped the garden to grow.
The
club was busy
in the fall
harvesting
lettuces, tomatoes,
carrots, and
pumpkins which
had been planted
in early summer.
Students also
created handmade
greeting cards
from herbs
and flowers
in the garden.
These cards
were sold to
parents and
teachers during
Parent Report
Card night.
The proceeds
from the cards
will be used
to buy supplies
and seeds for
the spring
gardening season.
School
Entry: In
addition to growing vegetables, we also plant flowers and
bulbs in the garden in front of school. This garden was originally
planted by students beginning in 2001 as part of the Legacy
2000 project. Over the past 5 years, hundreds of North
students have helped it along. Today, the Gardening Club
directs most of the planting and maintenance.
About the tulips: The tulips are in their height of glory
the last weekend of April. Over the last three years, more than
500 tulips have been planted by North students in the front garden.
Last fall, all seventh-graders planted the new flagpole bed.
In previous falls, many of the current eighth- and ninth-graders
planted bulbs in the other beds. North students have a tradition
for school spirit and it shows!
