OBJECTIVE:  Consider the role POWER played in the success of Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay settlements.  Evaluate the differences between the emerging New England and Southern colonies.

 

Guiding Questions: How did the Pilgrims and the Puritans gain power in North America? How did the emerging Southern colonies differ from the New England colonies in their use of power?

 

Monday, Sept. 21:   Discuss The Rock and the Cod by Mark Kurlansky.  Notes on the success of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 22:  Discussion of power and the many aspects of power.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 23:  Ongoing discussion of power and aspects of power.

 

Thursday, Sept. 24:  Compare and contrast power in the New England and Southern colonies.

 

Friday, Sept. 25:  Examine New England and Southern dissenters and reasons for dissent.

Guiding Question: To what extent were the Middle Colonies the middle ground between the power and politics of New England and the power and politics of the Southern colonies?

OBJECTIVE:  Consider the disempowerment of African Americans in the English colonies.  Contrast with the effect of the Age of Enlightenment in the colonies.  VIKING SPIRIT WEEK!

 

Key Questions: How and why did slavery intensify?  How did the wealth generated by the colonies lead to the Age of Enlightenment?  How did the Age of Enlightenment lead to a new American identity?

 

Monday, Oct. 12:  Watch and take notes on PBS documentary, "Slavery and the Making of America: the Downward Spiral".  Homework: go the the interactive timeline at www.pbs.org/wnet/slavery/timeline/index.html and write down and describe the 5 most important events in the history of the nation with regard to slavery.

 

Tuesday, Oct. 13:  Wear a hat day. Notes on the Great Awakening.

 

Wednesday, Oct. 14:  Notes on the Age of Enlightenment.

 

Thursday, Oct. 15:  Readings from Benjamin Franklin.  Identify key beliefs of Franklin's that we hold true today, with regard to power and liberty or freedom.

 

Friday, Oct. 16: Wear white day--> Pep assembly in the afternoon.  Illustrate an aphorism of Benjamin Franklin's.  Due Monday BOP.
