Problem: How did the land and the available resources affect the settlement patterns and governing systems of the earliest English settlements?
Monday, Sept. 15: Discuss and turn in Slavery and the Making of America work. Notes on the economics of the slave trade. Read and outline Chapter 2, section 3 (England's Southern Colonies).
Tuesday, Sept. 16: Founding of Jamestown notes. Letter from an indentured servant SOAPS, due Wednesday BOP.
Wednesday, Sept. 17: CONSTITUTION DAY! Read the Mayflower Compact and compare with the Preamble to the Constitution. Write your own Preamble for your small group.
Thursday, Sept. 18: Discuss Preambles. Read and outline Chapter 2, section 4 on the New England colonies. Due Friday BOP.
Friday, Sept. 19: Letter of Robert Cushman SOAPS. Read The Rock and the Cod by Mark Kurlansky and complete questions by Monday, BOP.

OBJECTIVE: Analyze basis for creation of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies. Examine the growth of the 13 colonies.
PROBLEM: During the initial period of development, what caused the development of unique economies in the three regions of the 13 colonies?
Monday, Sept. 22: Discuss letter of Robert Cushman and Kurlansky's Cod. Journal: Both the Southern colonies and the New England colonies were dependent on the sea for success. How did each use the sea and how did their resource extraction methods lead to very different colonies? Due Tuesday BOP.
Tuesday, Sept. 23: Notes on the Middle colonies from Chapter 2, section 5. Due Wednesday BOP.
Wednesday, Sept. 24: The life of Benjamin Franklin. Choose a Franklin aphorism and illustrate it. Due Monday BOP. HW: Write down 3 issues that most concern you about the future and be prepared to research the Republican and Democratic Parties positions on those issues.
Thursday, Sept. 25: Election Check-In. PROGRESS REPORTS GO HOME TO BE SIGNED AND RETURNED.

Tuesday, Sept. 30: Turn in Benjamin Franklin aphorism project. Continue to review from review sheet. Study characteristics of Southern Colonies from United Streaming video.
Wednesday, Oct. 1: Test on first peopling of Americas, European exploration, settlement and creation of original 13 English colonies.
Thursday and Friday, Oct. 2 and 3 are State In-Service days, and I will be at the Idaho Council for History Education seminar.

OBJECTIVES: Determine new American regional characteristics. Compare and contrast Age of Enlightenment and Great Awakening.
Problem: How did the economy of a region affect the characteristics of the people living there?
Monday, Oct. 6th: Analyze test results. Examine language of the test.
Tuesday, Oct. 7th: Complete test examination. Work on regional economies chart, based on Chapter 2, sections 1 and 2. HW: Do take home test. Due Weds. BOP.
Wednesday, Oct. 8th: Notes on Navigation Acts. Analyze Watson and the Shark or Burning of the Gaspee as representations of the problems inherent in the Navigation Acts. Due Thursday BOP.
Thursday, Oct. 9th: Notes on Enlightenment and the Great Awakening, with focus on Benjamin Franklin, John Locke and Jonathan Edwards. Read and discuss excerpts from Locke's Treatise on Government and Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
Friday, Oct. 10th: Team Day ~ October Skies.
