Owyhee Flyer

May 29, 2008

Wednesday June 4 is our Annual Field Day and Family BBQ. If you are willing to volunteer, contact your child’s teacher. Please see the attached flyer for more information on the schedule, dress code and activities. Reminder -- there will be no afternoon kindergarten on Wednesday, June 4. All kindergarteners will participate in Field Day activities in the morning and should attend school from 8:45 to11:00. Kindergarteners may stay for a family BBQ that begins at 11:00 only if a parent attends too.

Thursday, June 5 is the last day of school and is an Early Release Day for students in first through sixth grade.  First through sixth graders will be dismissed at 1:15 (lunch will be served). All kindergarteners should attend from 8:45 to 11:30 so they can participate in a graduation ceremony in the gym beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Our Hall of Fame Celebration is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5 (the last day of school). This special assembly celebrates and recognizes the academic achievements (primarily in mathematics) of students in first through sixth grade. Students who have passed at least one Hall of Fame category will receive a certificate. Students who passed the seven categories at their grade level will receive an engraved plaque.

A kindergarten graduation ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 5 at 10:15 a.m. Please don’t arrive too early as the cafeteria will already be in use for the Hall of Fame Assembly until approximately 10:00 and parking will also be limited until the Hall of Fame Assembly is over.

Report cards will be sent home with students on the last day of school IF all textbooks and library books are returned or paid for. We'll hold report cards in the office if you need additional time to locate books or pay lost book fees.

Were you disappointed that Owyhee didn’t hold a school carnival this year? We have a solution for you. Owyhee students have been invited to Monroe Elementary’s School Carnival this Friday, May 30th. The carnival is from 6:00 – 8:30 and includes games for little and big kids. The western theme features live entertainment, line dancing and music. Hot dogs, raffle prizes and a cake walk are also part of this fun night!

Mark your calendars -- our Back to School Picnic and School Supply Drop Off will be Thursday, August 21 at Owyhee Park.  This event is an opportunity to meet teachers, other staff members and other parents before school starts. The school supply drop off is from 5:00 to 5:30 and the potluck picnic will be from 5:30 to 6:30. A flyer with more information (and a carpool sign up form) will be enclosed with your child’s report card.

A message from Mrs. Permann

Dear Staff, Students and Parents,

I only have one more week at my desk and so wanted to just take a moment. A moment to thank you for all you have given me. Five years ago I knew no one in Boise and God in His wisdom and grace placed me here at Owyhee.  What a blessing you have been in my life.  Your smiles, encouragement, trust and making me feel useful. You have enlarged my life!!  I will carry you all in my heart to California.

With much affection,

Michelle or Mrs. Permann

Administrative Assistant

A message from Mrs. Behler

I wish to thank all of the students and parents of Owyhee-Harbor past and present for all your support and kindness you have shown me these four years.  I especially thank the PTO for their support to help keep our AR program current.  The best gift we can give our children is the ability to read. If you can read – you can do anything!

Sincerely,

Jacque Behler

Librarian

Another warm welcome is in order. Owyhee will host a special education preschool program next year and on an ongoing basis. The program will be located in Portable #93. Debbie Olson, a veteran preschool teacher will join our staff and I know she’ll be a wonderful addition. She hopes to involve some of our older students as recess buddies and peer helpers.

You might see a lot of activity at Owyhee before school is out and in the weeks that follow (depending on the weather). You may see construction workers removing sod and spreading gravel to prepare a space behind the dumpsters for a portable building that includes two classrooms. This new portable will house our computer lab and the reading intervention room (currently in Portable #93) next year. Science will move to Room #13 (the current computer lab location). The new fourth grade will be in Room #8 (the current science room).

Make sure your child's lunch account does not have a negative balance.  Money remaining on your child's account will roll forward to next year if your child attends a Boise district school.

Be sure to check our Lost and Found next time you’re at school. Any belongings that are not claimed by the last day of school will be donated to charity.

The school office will be open from 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 4:00 through Thursday, June 12, 2008. It will reopen again on Monday, August 4 with the same hours.

Please make reading a priority this summer! Research shows that students who read at least six books over the summer (that's only 2 books a month) maintain or improve their reading skills! Your child can stock up on summer reading material and the annual BOOK SWAP that continues through Tuesday, June 3.

Please let us know if your plans for the 2008-09 school year change. If your child won't attend here next year, families on the waiting list will appreciate having that information before summer vacation. If your plans change over the summer, call 854-5850 and leave a message on our answering machine or e-mail Nolene.Weaver@boiseschools.org.

This is our last Owyhee Flyer for the 2007-08 school year.  Thanks for all of your support throughout this year. Best wishes for a wonderful summer. We’ll see most of you again in August!

*  If you have children in multiple grades you are welcome to arrive at the earliest lunch time. We’ll be happy to send an adult runner for your older students so your family can go through the line and eat together.

Our school dress code will still apply on Field Day. Swimming suits, muscle shirts, spaghetti straps, short shorts, and bare backs or midriffs are not allowed. Students need to wear tennis shoes or sturdy sport sandals (no flip flops). Please have your child wear clothing and shoes that won’t be ruined by water. If you want your child to change afterwards, please send dry clothes.

Planning ahead for heat and sun will keep Field Day fun! Please send sun screen, and a visor or sun hat. Ice water and cups will be available. If you send a water bottle please use a permanent marker to label it with your child’s name.

Bring a picnic blanket and have lunch on the lawn! If you prefer to sit at a table and/or want to escape the heat, tables will be available in the cafeteria with open seating.

Please bring small bills or change so you can purchase a ticket for an adult lunch ($2.10) and any lunches for younger siblings ($1.60).  Please do not ask the kitchen to charge your lunch to your child’s account as this slows the line down significantly on the busiest day of the year in the cafeteria!
