Welcome to the guidance and counseling program
at Riverside School. Included on this page are descriptions
of the services provided by Tani Leighton-Nelson, Riverside’s
full-time counselor, and Katrina Bradbury, part-time counselor.
Please contact us if you have any questions about our program.
Focus areas:
- Classroom guidance: As counselors, we teach guidance lessons
to all students in grades K-6. These include lessons in three
domains: Academics, Personal/Social, and Safety.
- Small groups: These are offered to students who may be facing
a challenging situation, e.g. parents’ divorce, developing
friendship skills, etc. Referrals for group come from teachers,
parents, and/or students themselves.
- Individual work with students: We see students on an individual
basis if they need assistance in sorting out a concern related
to home or school. Again, these referrals may come from a parent,
teacher, or student.
- Parent/staff consultation: We serve as consultants to parents,
teachers, administrators, and community agencies.
- Other: As staff members at Riverside School, we also serve
on various committees and teams; e.g., School Safety, Student
Services, Multi-Disciplinary, Results Based Model, etc.

Educational background and experience:
Tani Leighton-Nelson: School Counseling is a second career for me. I graduated
from the College of Idaho in 1993 with a master’s degree in education;
counseling emphasis. I was hired in the Boise School District the same year,
and have worked at three elementary schools since that time. This is my eighth
year at Riverside. In addition to my certification as a school counselor,
I am also a licensed professional counselor.
Katrina Bradbury: I am a graduate student getting my
Master's degree from the counseling program at BSU.
Mrs. Leighton-Nelson and I are co-facilitating small
groups and individual children this year. I currently
work one day a week at Riverside, teaching guidance
units in kindergarten, first, second and fourth
grades.
