COMMUNICATION:
Keeping the lines of communication open between home and school is vital to your child's success. I am always happy to hear from you and discuss your child's progress. The best way to contact me is via email at beth.mills@boiseschools.org I am at school between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm every day, so you can stop in or call. I also use the agenda books (see below) for a quick view of what is happening each day, and I send a newsletter each Monday.
AGENDA BOOKS:
The agenda book is a highly effective way to communicate between home and school. We will fill out our books each day with everything that we covered in class. Parents should initial the agendas at the bottom of the page. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to write them in the agenda book. I check agendas each day.
HOMEWORK:
Students will receive a weekly Reading Homework sheet. I require 120 minutes of reading outside of class each week. This breaks down to 20-30 minutes, 4-5 days a week. However, I understand how hectic evenings can be. Therefore, it doesn't matter to me if the student does the whole 120 minutes in one sitting or several. Just so long as the total is met. The reading homework sheet is due on Monday (or the first day of the week).
I will send home other homework as deemed necessary. The important thing is that homework should take no more than 50-60 minutes to complete (including reading time!). If your child is consistently bringing home more work than this, please contact me.
GRADING/LATE WORK
Fifth Graders should be expected to turn work in on time. Work that is one day late will be reduced by 10%, while work that is more than a day late will be a zero. Students who are absent will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete their work (Typically 2-3 days). Long term projects are reduced one letter grade for every day late. Teacher discretion may be used in extreme cases.
I expect students to do their best work at all times; however, I also realize that everyone has an occasional low score on a paper. I do allow students to re-do most assignments and tests if their score is below 75%. The old score and new score are then averaged. This allows every child to succeed.
ACCELERATED READER
AR is a program designed to motivate students to read books of their choosing. Students read books and take quizzes. They are then awarded points toward a quarterly goal. I count AR as 20% of the overall reading grade. Students who meet the AR goal at the end of each quarter are invited to attend the AR party.
