Accelerated Reader is a reading supplement used at Shadow Hills. The classroom teacher decides how best to incorporate AR into the reading program.

Students take the Star Reading Test (a diagnostic reading assessment tool), which gives them a reading range to help assist them in selecting appropriate books for their reading ability. As the child reads and test on the books, the reading range is reviewed by teacher and can be adjusted when needed.

Shadow Hills has a school wide goal, a grade level goal, and goals for individuals. When students reach their first individual goal, they earn an AR Button. Then they can earn stickers as they continue to meet the next goals.

The Library supports the AR Program by ordering books and test and labeling the books for easy access. All AR books are labeled with reading level, points, and colored coding.
