Residential Construction


Residential Construction Trades 1
Open to:
10, 11, and 12
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for the student interested in the residential and commercial construction industry. This course emphasizes construction safety, hands-on skill training, and related theory needed in the industry. Areas covered in the course include: safety, construction math, introduction to hand tools, introduction to power tools, blueprints, rigging, building materials, fasteners, adhesives, floor systems, wall and ceiling framing, roof framing and window and exterior doors. Students must complete Construction Trades 1 in order to take Residential Construction 2, 3.

Residential Construction 2
Open to:
11, 12 – one year course
Prerequisite: Residential Construction Trades 1 and Instructor/Counselor Approval

Students will meet at a residential building site and construct an actual house from the ground up. Skills taught include: laying out of house on building lot, framing of floor, walls and roof, installation of roofing materials, siding, windows, doors, drywall, cabinets and painting. Students will have the opportunity to observe craftsmen in various trades, i.e. electricians, plumbers, HVAC and tile setters.

Residential Construction 3
Open to:
12 – semester or year course
Prerequisite: Residential Construction 2

Students will receive advanced instruction in planning, blueprint reading, lumber estimating and different types of floor, wall, and roof framing. Varieties of roofing, siding, windows, and doors are also covered. Team leadership opportunities demonstrating responsibility for equipment safety and leading student areas are provided.

Residential Construction: Internship
Open to:
12 – semester or year course)
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of competencies demonstrating skills necessary for employment. Instructor Approval.

Students will secure an appropriate and related job with training plan approved by instructor. Student will be responsible for his/her own transportation. Fifteen hours on-the-job paid work experience and additional related training class per week.
