Commercial Photography 1 is a beginning course in the study of Digital photography as a visual communication with emphasis on the SLR digital camera. Exposure, metering, selective focusing, depth of field, lenses, electronic flash, basic lighting control and composition are explored. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, assignments and critiques, students learn to see photography through an exploration of the basic tools, techniques and aesthetics of digital photography, with an emphasis on creative use of camera controls and digital imaging software, and an awareness of the critical issues in contemporary photography. SLR Digital Camera Provided. No Fee.

Expanding upon the basic photographic tools and techniques introduced in Commercial Photography 1, students in this course gain an in-depth understanding of file management, digital printing techniques, controlled lighting possibilities, and advanced printing techniques, controlled lighting possibilities, and advanced investigating and documenting of contemporary issues in our local community in a photojournalistic approach. Students will prepare a small body of matted prints for their portfolio including a resume and artist statement. SLR Digital Camera Provided. No Fee.

Prerequisite: Commercial Photography 2 or Instructor approval

Students will explore career pathways via internet and personal exposure to local professional organizations. In this advanced course, students will research entrepreneurship and comprehend how their photographic images relate to career pathways including: printing, graphic arts, journalism, studio, research, advertising, and stock. Students will participate in an internship, co-op training observation or job shadowing within the professional photographic or graphics industry. The students will experience using various software and camera formats, relating to the photography industry. This course focuses on each students’ personal vision and the many ways to present that vision, through a final professional portfolio that will meet market standards of professional quality. Each student will acquire a venue to display their portfolio at the end of the year. (This course provides comprehensive guidelines for the critique and evaluation of portfolios for commercial and other types of discussions, address professional goals, business plans, marketing tools and interviewing styles.)
