It is the philosophy of the Boise School District that visually
impaired students attend their neighborhood schools to grow
socially and academically with their peers. Participating
students are provided support services upon recommendation
of the Child Study Team and with parental permission. Our
program provides materials, direct teaching, and consultative
services to visually impaired students and their teachers.
We serve totally blind, legally blind, and partially sighted
students.
|
Students diagnosed with 20/70 or worse vision with best correction
are qualified to receive services. Students with a progressive
eye disease, a restricted field of vision, or a patch for
lazy eye may also qualify. We provide a functional vision
assessment for students who are suspected of having a visual
loss.
The teacher of the visually impaired travels throughout the
District providing services. Frequency and types of services
are determined by the individual needs of our students and
are listed on an IEP along with associated goals. The itinerant
teacher also provides consultative services to other students
and teachers and arranges for appropriate format testing.

Students with a minor vision loss who really need no special
services should contact us as we provide a variety of programs
to increase self-esteem and socialization such as banquets,
winter and summer camps and, at the high school level, job
placement. Even if we provide no direct services, these students
are welcome to attend these events.
