Speech & Language Pathology
The Speech and Language Pathology component of the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program emphasizes 3 primary
areas of therapy.
- Auditory skill development
- Speech skill development
- Language development (oral/signed/written)
We offer a variety of professional
services:
- Comprehensive individual assessment
of strengths and needs.
- Individual and small group instruction.
- Services that
typically utilize a "pull-out" model
(speech/language therapy room).
- Goals and objectives targeting functional
communication.
- Individualized program based on
input from parents, teachers, and comprehensive
assessment.
- Service design/goal facilitates
academic growth and promotes communication competence
at home and in the community.
- Operates within the framework of
a Total Communication* philosophy, emphasizing
aural/oral development to the greatest degree possible.
- English language emphasis (Manually
Coded English).
- Available as a resource for in servicing
mainstream staff and students regarding hearing
loss.
* Total Communication - is the selection
of sign or speech and the use of speechreading and
residual hearing. In different situations, some students
benefit more from an auditory/oral approach and some
from a visual/gestural approach.
Our therapists meet these professional qualifications:
- Masters Degree in Speech Pathology.
- Hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)
from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
(ASHA).
- Member in good standing with ASHA, Idaho Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ISHA).
- Have sign language skills (English based system).
- Experience working with the deaf/hard of hearing
school age population, including students with cochlear
implants.
