Special Education Services
Early Childhood Education
Preschool 3 - 5
The
Boise Schools Early Childhood Special Education program
provides services to developmentally disabled preschool
children between the ages of 3 and 5 and support to their
families. Our goal is to better prepare them for school
and reduce the need for special education services once
they begin kindergarten or first grade.
The preschool staff encourages parents and families
to be involved in the education of their child. ECSE
teachers, speech/language pathologists, occupational
therapists, physical therapists, psychologists and instructional
assistants provide instruction and therapy.
There are 16 ECSE sites and children are placed in or
close to their neighborhood school. Transportation is
provided.
Most preschool children attend school 2 hours 45 minutes,
4 days a week (Tuesday - Friday). Because of short attention
spans and, often times, poor physical stamina of young
children, the amount of time each child spends in the
program is planned carefully by the Child Study Team.
Philosophy
The Early Childhood Special Education program adopts
the philosophy that every child is unique with an individual
pattern of growth and development. The program goals,
curriculum and materials are developmentally appropriate
and geared to differing abilities. The program provides
a safe and nurturing environment which promotes and integrates
the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, communication
and self-help areas of development through classroom
activities.
