Staff Memo - Coronavirus Prevention & Preparation

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Dear Boise School District Staff Member:

In collaboration with Central District Health, we have prepared the following brief summary of our prevention and preparation efforts in regards to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

WHAT WE KNOW & WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Keep Schools Open & Operating Safely

  • Students receive the best educational experience when in school. As long as our schools remain safe for students, staff and our community, we will remain open. Of course, we will respect the right of parents/guardians to make choices they believe are best for their child. We have been assured by public health officials that school closures in our area are unwarranted at this time.

Clean Schools

  • We have increased the frequency of our regular daily school/site cleanings, and we are using EPA-approved disinfectants to keep our schools/sites clean and following cleaning guidelines.

Good Personal Hygiene

  • We continue to encourage our students, staff & community to stay healthy by regular hand washing, avoiding touching face, staying home when sick, etc.

If Schools Close

  • If we are required to close some or all of our schools, we will provide specific information about the ability to continue education for our students.

Staff Attendance Impact

  • If we are required to close some or all of our schools, employees in the impacted schools will not be charged sick leave or personal leave during that time.
  • If a staff member chooses to stay home to avoid contracting COVID-19, they will utilize personal leave.
  • If an employee is utilizing sick leave due to contracting COVID-19 or to care for someone who has contracted COVID-19, for more than ten (10) consecutive workdays, the professional employee must submit a signed statement from a licensed physician attesting to the professional employee’s illness, to the illness of the individual being cared for or that the employee is an at-risk or high-risk individual due to other health factors.
    • In accordance with the Master Contract and State Law, sick leave is to be used for absences caused by a disability resulting from illness or injury, or other medical and health reasons. Sick leave can also be used to care for a member of the immediate family due to his or her illness or disability.
    • Family means a spouse, child, foster child, foster parents, parent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparent, grandchild, or the same relation by marriage, or legal guardian. Such leave will be charged on either a half-day or full-day basis.

Credible/Reliable Information

Our priority is the safety, health, and well-being of our staff, students and school community. We will continue monitoring any developments and plan accordingly in partnership with local, state, and federal authorities. You can expect further updates and information from us as needed.

Sincerely,

Coby Dennis
