Chalk the Walk: Boise High Schools and Boise State Athletes Raise Suicide Prevention Awareness

In a heartwarming and impactful event, students from Boise, Borah, Capital, and Timberline High Schools joined forces this week with Boise State University student-athletes to raise awareness for suicide prevention. The event, titled Chalk the Walk, took place at Boise City Hall on Monday, September 9th as part of National Suicide Prevention Month. Participants filled the walkways with colorful chalk messages of hope, inspiration, and support to remind the community that no one has to face their struggles alone.

Chalk the Walk extended its reach beyond the high schools. Elementary school students across the Boise School District also participated by writing their own messages of kindness and hope at their respective schools. Some of these elementary schools were even joined by members of the Boise State football team, including Boise State star running back and Heisman Trophy contender Ashton Jeanty, who offered support and encouragement to the young students (watch video below to learn more). Their presence further emphasized the importance of kindness, mental health awareness, and looking out for one another.

The combination of high school, elementary school, and college participants created a unified effort to spread positivity throughout the Boise community. By coming together, they not only raised awareness about suicide prevention but also fostered a culture of compassion and support at all levels of education. Events like Chalk the Walk highlight the power of community and remind us that help and hope are always available, no matter your age or stage in life. Watch the following videos for more information.

Video: Boise School District Launches Hope Squads to Boost Student Mental Health and Well-Being

New in the Boise School District this year, Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program offered as an elective at every junior high school and all four of our traditional high schools and Boise Online School. Students attend class during the day with time allocated to recognize their own strengths, manage themselves, and become a mental health student leader in the school.

This week, Abby Davis from KTVB highlighted the Hope Squad at Capital High School and how this unique and valuable initiative is having a positive impact on students and is part of the district's overall commitment to student mental health and well-being. Watch or read her story here.

Boise School District Promotes Mental Health Resources and Support as National Suicide Prevention Month Begins

Boise School District’s efforts to recognize National Suicide Prevention Month are now fully underway, reflecting the district’s commitment to student well-being as a top priority.

Throughout September, Boise Schools will be dedicating time in classrooms to discuss the critical topic of suicide prevention with students. Alongside these classroom discussions, the district is ensuring that families are aware of the wide range of mental health resources and support services available to all Boise Schools students and their families.

Every student deserves to feel a sense of belonging, support, and value at school. The district recognizes that conversations about mental health and suicide can be difficult, and wants students and families to know they are not alone. Boise School District encourages parents and guardians to take advantage of the many resources and programs offered, including:

  • An age-by-age guide on how to talk to your child about suicide
  • Signs that indicate your child may benefit from speaking with a counselor
  • Suicide prevention and intervention programs
  • Access to five free counseling sessions for students, their caregivers, and siblings, through a partnership with Central District Health and BPA Health
  • Resources on grief and how to manage it
  • And much more

By working together, we can foster a safe and supportive environment where every student can thrive.
