In-Person Learning Update

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Dear Boise School District Parent/Guardian & Staff:

We are exploring getting our students back to five-days-a-week in-person learning as quickly as possible, but also as safely as possible. Last week, we shared information that we have formed an Exploratory Committee composed of teachers, parents, principals, and school nurses representing all geographical areas of the Boise School District, as well as both elementary and secondary schools. The committee is tasked with making recommendations to the Administration regarding conditions for when and how students should return to full-time in-person learning.

Factors under consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Ability to physically distance with all students back in-person;
  • Timeline when the majority of staff will be fully vaccinated, including our most vulnerable population age 65 and older who can be severely impacted by COVID-19;
  • Warmer weather conditions that will allow for more fresh air being brought into the buildings;
  • Ability to use outside space to help with physical distancing;
  • Advice from medical professionals and Central District Health;
  • The trend of COVID-19 cases in our community; and
  • Adequate turnaround time to fully staff & support Food Service & Transportation operations prior to return to five-days-a-week in-person learning.

When we do bring students back to five-days-a-week in-person learning, we want to do all we can to provide consistency and predictability for our students, families and staff for the remainder of this school year.

Within the next week, parents and staff will each receive separate surveys to gauge interest and support for a return to five-days-a-week in-person learning. We urge everyone to participate in these surveys in order to give us as much information as possible.

If you have specific questions and concerns about safety protocols at your student’s school when all students are back in-person, please contact your school principal.

The Board of Trustees will receive an update on the work of the committee on Monday, February 8th during the regularly scheduled 6:00 p.m. Board meeting. A link for public viewing of the Board meeting will be posted online

During the Board meeting, Dr. Kenny Bramwell (St. Luke’s), Dr. Mark Nassir (Saint Al’s) and Gina Pannell (Central District Health) will update the Board about their recommendations for in-person learning and answer Trustee’s questions. The Board will consider scheduling special meetings as needed to receive committee updates as frequently and timely as possible.

We are committed to keeping you informed as further information becomes available. Thank you for your continued support.
