Timberline High Teacher Kameron Yeggy Honored with Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Timberline High School science teacher Kameron Yeggy has been named one of 336 educators nationwide to receive the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This award represents the highest national recognition for K-12 educators in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

Kameron Yeggy’s innovative teaching methods and dedication to fostering a love for science have made a lasting impact on students at Timberline High. Known for his engaging lessons and ability to connect complex scientific concepts to real-world applications, Yeggy empowers students to think critically and explore the possibilities within STEM fields.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor,” said Yeggy. “It reflects the collaborative spirit of our school community and the hard work of my students who continuously inspire me with their curiosity and determination.”

Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The award recognizes teachers who excel in using innovative teaching strategies and contribute to their profession through leadership and mentorship.

Superintendent Lisa Roberts praised Yeggy’s achievement, stating, “Kameron’s commitment to excellence in teaching exemplifies the quality of education we strive to provide in the Boise School District. We are incredibly proud of his accomplishments and the inspiration he brings to both his students and colleagues.”

Kameron Yeggy’s recognition brings the number of Timberline educators who have received this prestigious award to three: Kameron Yeggy, Jerod Morehouse, and Sean Boston. This milestone highlights Timberline High School’s tradition of excellence and its dedication to fostering outstanding educators.

Awardees are selected based on their distinction in teaching and their ability to motivate students to achieve academic and personal success. As part of the recognition, recipients receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and are invited to a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where they will be honored for their contributions to education.

Kameron Yeggy’s recognition serves as a testament to the outstanding educators within the Boise School District and their dedication to preparing students for future success. Congratulations to Mr. Yeggy on this well-deserved honor!

Hawthorne Elementary Students Engage with Astronaut Don Pettit During NASA In-Flight Education Downlink

Hawthorne Elementary students had a once-in-a-lifetime experience last Friday, connecting with astronaut Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station (ISS) through a NASA In-Flight Education Downlink. Students asked questions via prerecorded video messages, gaining unique insights into life in space.

The event, held at Hawthorne Elementary School, was attended by Idaho Lieutenant Governor Scott Bedke, state lawmakers, Boise School District leaders, and board members. Former NASA astronaut Steve Swanson, now at Boise State University as a Boise State Educator in Residence, shared his ISS experiences and answered students' questions.

"This extraordinary opportunity connects our learners with the wonders of space exploration and the real-world impact of STEM education," said Superintendent Lisa Roberts during her welcome address.

Guided by 3rd-grade teacher Kellie Taylor, students spent weeks preparing for the event, which also included virtual participation from students across Idaho. Swanson added depth to the session by describing the daily life of astronauts and the challenges of zero gravity.

NASA’s Downlink program inspires future explorers by connecting classrooms with astronauts in space. Public Affairs Administrator Dan Hollar highlighted the event’s significance, saying, "This has truly inspired our students and community."

The Downlink was a resounding success, sparking curiosity and showcasing the transformative power of education and exploration. Click on the video image to watch the downlink event and relive this exciting moment.

Boise School Board Explores Concerns Over Private School Choice Legislation

During the Boise School Board’s regular monthly meeting on January 13, 2025, Quinn Perry, Deputy Director & Government Affairs for the Idaho School Boards Association, delivered a presentation addressing potential private school choice legislation anticipated in this year’s Idaho legislative session.

Perry detailed the significant concerns surrounding the proposed legislation, emphasizing the negative implications it could have on Idaho's public schools. She explained how private school choice initiatives, such as voucher programs, divert essential funding away from public schools, potentially impacting the resources and opportunities available to Idaho’s public school students. She also presented data showing how similar legislation in other states has led to budget overruns, further straining public education systems (see adjacent graphic).
