Safe Routes to School

The Boise School District supports the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, a national movement that encourages students and families to choose active transportation - walking, biking, scootering, or rolling - and and from school. These simple choices promote healthy habits, improve safety, and reduce congestion around our school campuses.

Active kids are healthier, more focused, and more confident. Walking or biking just 15-20 minutes in the morning can:
* Boost mood and brain function
* Help reach the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity
* Encourage independence and community awareness

Join your neighborhood friends to start a daily healthy habit with these safety tips for students and families:

🚶Walking Safely
* Always use sidewalks and marked crosswalks
* Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing
* Avoid distractions like phones or headphones while walking
🚴Biking Safety
* Wear a properly-fitted helmet every time
* Ride with traffic, not against it
* Use hand signals to show turns
* Walk bikes across busy intersections
🚗Driver Safety
* Drive slowly and attentively near schools
* Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks
* Never block crosswalks or school driveways
* Avoid distractions - put the phone away while driving

🤝Get Involved
We welcome families and community members to help us make routes safer and more accessible. You can volunteer for walking groups and events, report unsafe streets or sidewalks to city planners, and share ideas with your school's office. You may also apply to work as a school crossing guard at specific locations.
