(Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a proven college readiness system, established over 35 years ago, that uses research-based strategies and curriculum to help close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is a school-wide approach to curriculum and rigor. The Boise School District first implemented AVID at Fairmont Junior High in 2006. Since then, the AVID system has been implemented in every junior high and high school in the Boise School District. In addition, elementary students are being exposed to AVID strategies such as focused note-taking, binder organization and WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies.   AVID is a system for “academic middle to upper academic middle” students. However, AVID students must be hard working, have a positive attitude, and be collaborative in nature. They must also have a strong desire to attend school beyond high school and have the individual determination to do what it takes to get there. AVID students are placed into college preparatory classes, designed to fulfill the requirements needed for entry into college. AVID students have the potential for academic success in these courses, with the support from teachers, AVID students and university tutors. The true motivation to succeed in AVID, as well as in all classes, comes from students themselves.

Although AVID was originally designed for students who are academically "under-represented," students that have the individual determination, want to be challenged in rigorous course work and prepare for college, are encouraged to apply to be part of AVID in the Boise School District.

Boise School District’s AVID Program

  • AVID is a nationally recognized College and Career Readiness System that is built on researched based best practices.The Boise District first implemented AVID at Fairmont Junior High in 2006-2007.
  • AVID is in its 16th year of implementation as an elective and is in all 13 secondary schools as well as 2 elementary sites, with Fairmont serving as an AVID NationalDemonstration School.
  • AVID offers a variety of amazing classroom activities, teaching strategies and lesson plans to help our educators implement and refine instructional practices school-wide in our AVID schools.
  • Research-based instructional practices include collaborative study groups, focused note-taking, inquiry-based seminars and complex document analysis.
  • AVID’s College and Career Readiness System has been a tremendous success for Boise School students.

2020-2021 AVID Highlights

The AVID College and Career Readiness System enabled students to persevere through this unprecedented school year.

  • 1132 students benefited from the AVID Elective.
  • 96% of our AVID 11 and AVID 12 students were enrolled in at least one AdvancedPlacement and/or concurrent credit course.
  • 96% of AVID students earned a “C” or better grade in their core academic courses in the last formal grading period.
  • Out of the 105 AVID seniors, 50% of their parents did not graduate from a college or university, yet 91% have applied and been accepted to college and plan to attend college in the upcoming fall. The other 9% have chosen another post-secondary option.
  • We are proud to announce our first AVID graduate attending Harvard University in the fall.
  • Over the years, our AVID students have attended colleges such as Pepperdine University,Baylor University, University of Arizona, University of Southern California, University ofUtah, Whittier College, Washington State University, Oregon State University, WillametteUniversity, as well as Boise State, College of Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, College ofWestern Idaho, Idaho State University, Northwest Nazarene University, and the University of Idaho.

AVID Seniors Direct Entry Compared to Non-AVID Seniors

  • 2015-16: 76/103 AVID seniors = 74% direct entry into college
  • 2016-17: 82/114 AVID seniors = 72% direct entry into college
  • 2017-18: 68/107 AVID seniors = 64% direct entry into college
  • 2018-19: 77/111 AVID seniors = 69% direct entry into college
  • 2019-20: 93/126 AVID seniors = 74% direct entry into college

There were 1,871 total number of seniors in BSD in 2019-20 which included the 126 AVID seniors. If you take the AVID students out of the 1,871, there were 1,745 Non-AVID seniors. 972/1745 went directly into college= 56%, compared to our 74% AVID students.
